TOPIC: Technical Tax Topics from Filing Season 2018
Seminar Description: In this session, two panels of NJSEA tax experts will share technical tax challenges they faced and resolved during filing season. They will also lead a directed discussion where atteendees will be able share their own technical tax challenges. Discussion will be geared mainly toward individual tax issues, but will also address the challenges faced in preparing business tax returns.

Bernadette Antonelli, EA
Bernadette is the owner of Arlington Tax & Bookkeeping Service. She has more than 33 years of experience in taxation for individuals and businesses, servicing more than 1600 clients. Bernadette has been an NAEA and NJSEA member for more than 14 years. During that time, she has served as a member of the Board of Directors, Vice President, various committee chairs, and Mentor. Currently, Bernadette holds the position of President of the NJ Society of Enrolled Agents and she serves on the NAEA Affiliate Council.
Bernadette has served as a member of the NAEA membership committee for the past four years and will be the NAEA membership chair for 2018-2019. She has attended NAEA Schulinder/Smolen Leadership Academy as well as numerous APEX and National Board meetings. She will be completing level three of NPTI and will be graduating as an NTPI Fellow in August.
She is an active participant in civic and service organizations including past president of the chamber of commerce, past president of the Lions Club, Safety Council and Kiwanis Clubs and past board of directors of United Way. She is currently a member of the Point Pleasant Rotary and Point Pleasant Unico Clubs. She was named as Citizen of the Year by North Arlington Unico, and was named as a recipient of the Publisher's Front Page Award and the Award of Excellence as one of the best NJ businesses by the Italian Tribune newspaper.
Bernadette holds the credential of accredited tax advisor (ATA) and accredited tax preparer (ATP) from the Accreditation Council for Accounting and taxation.
Ed Forker, Jr., EA
Ed has been an accountant and tax professional for over 30 years. He has assisted clients with tax matters ranging from tax planning to tax compliance and small business planning and consulting. Ed started his accounting career in 1980 with a large Fortune 500 company based in Edison, NJ. . After several years of progressive experience and senior management roles Ed moved to Tampa, Florida to start his own small business venture (a chain of ice cream and yogurt stores) and continue his accounting practice in the Tampa Bay area. Ed has worked with some of the largest and most prominent accounting firms in both Florida and New Jersey where he has practiced tax consulting, business planning, and tax compliance in areas such as manufacturing, real estate, restaurants, professional and financial services and emerging and small businesses.
Anna Goldman, EA
Anna is a senior accountant at Mercadien, P.C., CPAs and has been with the firm for over 14 years. Anna is an Enrolled Agent licensed to represent clients before the Internal Revenue Service. She specializes in resolving tax notices and preparation for tax exams. As an accountant and member of the firm’s tax department, Anna performs tax preparation services for individuals and a variety of clients in industries such as real estate, retail, pharmaceutical, not for profit, and professional services. She has developed a beginner QuickBooks training class, which she utilizes in teaching her clients to do their own bookkeeping.
Anna received the Paul Harris Fellow Award from the Rotary Club of Princeton Foundation in 2008 for her dedication and commitment to this organization. Anna is also an active member of the National Association of Enrolled Agents and the New Jersey Society of Enrolled Agents.Ms. Goldman attended Rutgers University majoring in horticulture. She resides and gardens in Roosevelt, NJ with her husband and two daughters.
Robin Haar, EA
Robin has been a tax and accounting professional for almost 40 years. Robin worked in the Wine & Spirits industry for 26 years, 16 of those for a foreign owned company, before becoming an Enrolled Agent in 2007. She is currently a self-employed practitioner in Monmouth County, NJ, providing tax and accounting services to individuals, as well as all entities, in various states and abroad.
Robin holds a BS in Accounting from Brooklyn College. Within the past 4 years she has held positions of co-chair of the nominating committee of NJSEA, Director of NJSEA and chairperson of the Membership committee.
Ken Portera
Ken is the founder and operator of Kenneth Portera & Associates LLC, a year round tax preparation and accounting practice which he started in 2009. His firm provides tax controversy representation, tax preparation for individuals, partnerships, corporations, gift tax, estates and, non-profits. Prior to going off on his own he held positions of CEO, CFO, Treasurer, and Controller for a number of financial services companies. He holds an undergraduate degree in accounting from Pace University and completed some specialized graduate courses from the New School. Ken taught as an adjunct for 13 years in the City University system as part of the accounting and finance department. He holds an Enrolled Agent license and is an Accredited Tax Professional. Ken currently serves on the Board of Directors of the NJSEA and the New Jersey Chapter of the NATP.
