**Participants must attend both days in order to receive CEUs**
6 CE/Clock Hours LIVE Webinar split into two 3 hour sessions over 2 days:
*Important: This webinar will NOT be recorded*

Description:

Opioid abuse and addiction has become an epidemic in the US. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that life expectancy in the US fell slightly in 2016, for the second year in a row, due to the rising number of deaths of opioid overdoses. Over $485 million from the 21st Century Cures has been distributed to US states for addiction and treatment prevention with another $500 million still be distributed. More than 32.2% of foster care cases in 2015 were due to prenatal substance use, with use of opioids and methamphetamines a major factor. More than 427,910 children were in foster care in 2015 with the largest increases in Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Arizona and Minnesota. The number of babies suffering opiate-related addictions and symptoms of opiate withdrawal has tripled in the past decade. Every hour a baby is born in the US with symptoms of withdrawal from opiates, roughly 13,500 babies a year, with 4.5% of pregnant women using illegal drugs.

Opioid addicted children have difficulties with behavior, self-regulation, self-soothing, attachment, attention and academic difficulties, affect dysregulation and foster care placement. Little has been written about or presented on Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome and how best to work with children and caregivers. This workshop fills that gap by offering critical information about pre-natal opioid addiction in children, its impact on the polyvagal and neurological systems, long term consequences of NAS, and what play based treatments and techniques are useful. A variety of child/play therapy and play-based treatment approaches and techniques will be presented.
