The use of puppets in play therapy can create an alternative form of communication for children and families. Rich in symbolism and verbal metaphors, puppets are an engaging tool. Using puppets in play therapy has many benefits for children and adolescents struggling with social skills, low self-esteem, family separation, poor impulse control and anxiety and can be used in a variety of settings such as hospitals, outpatient & inpatient agencies, schools, private practice and home visits too. Puppets offer a way to create a visualization of the thinking process which helps the play therapist gain new insights about their clients. Thus, using puppets is another powerful medium to add to your tool-belt of play therapy techniques! Participants will have an opportunity to practice play therapy puppetry skills while enjoying the creative process of making their own puppets.

Learning Objectives:

• Describe the process of facilitating puppet use in play therapy sessions with individuals, groups and families
• Identify the theoretical underpinnings of play therapy tenants including attachment
• Construct assessment considerations for processing future sessions with clients

Presenter: Cheryl Hurst, LCSW-R, RPT-S

Ms. Cheryl Hurst is a New York State Social Worker, Play Therapist Supervisor and a Sandplay therapist. She began her career working to prevent the entry and reentry of children impacted by domestic violence into the New York City foster care system. She has co-facilitated Abusive Partner Intervention groups for 13 years. Ms. Hurst is a dedicated play therapist who believes families only get stronger with opportunities to connect with each other through play. Ms. Hurst has contributed to her field by training her fellow mental health providers and case planners for 9 years.  Using play therapy, she has also mentored Masters level social work candidates.

How to Access Live Webinar:

     To gain access this live webinar, participants will be required to register through Zoom, which is a conference-style live webinar platform where participants will be able to view presentations and interact with presenters in real time.  Participants will be required to register and pay using two separate links provided below.  To register, participants will be taken to a page on Zoom.us where they will be required to input their information in order to set-up an account and gain access to the live webinar.  To pay, participants will be taken to a ConstantContact.com page where they will be required to input their payment information.

Live Webinar Interaction:

     This course is presented lecture-style where participants will be able to follow along with a Power Point presentation that is sent out to registrants prior to the live webinar as well as being displayed on-screen during the webinar.  The live webinar will follow the timeline provided above.  Participants will be required to be active throughout the webinar as attendance is recorded through Zoom.  Participants will be given the opportunity throughout the live webinar, as well as during the Q&A portion, to ask questions through voice or text on the Zoom website.

     After completion of the live webinar, participants who have provided payment and have submitted a course evaluation will receive a certificate of completion via email.  CBPS will send an electronic copy of the certificate to the email supplied during registration, and participants can expect to receive it within 30 days of the live webinar.
