Eating Disorders, 101. In this presentation, clinicians will learn about the etiology, development and symptoms of eating disorders, as well as the risks of an active eating disorder. Clinicians will learn how to appropriately assess a client for an eating disorder, and will learn when to refer to a higher level of care. After the presentation, clinicians will walk away feeling more comfortable and competent in the following areas:

  • What are eating disorders?
  • What causes an eating disorder?
  • What are some consequences of eating disorders?
  • Who is at risk for an eating disorder?
  • What maintains eating disorders?
  • What can I do with my client when I suspect an eating disorder?

Presenter: Katlyn Heath-I am an Independently Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and the founder of Restorative Wellness, LLC.

For years, I worked in the partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient levels of care treating adults and adolescents suffering from severe eating disorders including Anorexia, Bulimia, and ARFID.

Along with a multi-disciplinary team, I worked closely with patients to provide specialized treatment that fostered recovery. I also worked closely with the families of my patients, to bring psychoeducation to the treatment in an effort to foster empathy and understanding, and facilitated weekly support groups for parents and families of those in treatment. Through my years of working in higher levels of care, I began to realize a real need for specialized care in the outpatient community. Not just in the realm of eating disorders, but also with adolescents, families and couples. I began Restorative Wellness as a means to bring together my passions for working with various populations and presenting problems and symptoms into a single space where clients can feel understood and obtain lasting results from their therapeutic work.

I am excited to bring to the outpatient realm the knowledge and skills that I have acquired though my work with families, adolescents, and individuals. Depression, anxiety, and other mental health challenges tend to isolate us from others and from ourselves, and can perpetuate our internal narratives that we are alone in what we think and how we feel. I have dedicated my life’s work to changing that narrative, one session at a time. I look forward to meeting you. Be well.
