Course Description:
This lecture will present clinical, epidemiological and molecular data related to the human papillomavirus (HPV) and its associated lesions. We will discuss mechanisms of cellular transformation in HPV-induced cancers and describe the histopathological features, markers and special stains used by pathologists to aid in the diagnosis. We also will analyze recent data and trends regarding this increasingly common infection and methods of prevention, including the HPV vaccine, in order to aid oral health professionals in educating their patients. Finally, we will discuss another recently identified form of oral squamous cell carcinoma, that of verrucous carcinoma-like lesions in the elderly.
Learning Objectives:
1. To describe the pathology seen in papillomavirus-induced lesions, both clinically and microscopically.
2. To discuss the link between HPV and the emerging phenomenon of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma.
3. To review the entity proliferative verrucous leukoplakia and its significance as a pre-malignant lesion.
