The Annual Ned Jaquith Organization Fundraiser at Bamboo Garden Nursery 

The annual "Ned’s Bash" will be held Saturday July 21, 2018! A potluck, workshops, an auction, and kids activities promise to be fun for the whole family. Optional overnight camping will go until dawn Sunday July 22. This family oriented event is held at Bamboo Garden, 18900 NW Collins Road, North Plains 97133. Please read below for all the important details.

Workshop: Indigo and Shibori Dyeing 10:00 am - 12:30 pm

Welcome to the magic world of indigo dyeing and the shibori technique for making fabric patterns. During this hands-on process, we will turn 2 cotton towels into pieces of art using folded, clamped and tied resist patterns. You also learn how to make your own indigo vat and about the dyeing process during this introduction to the ancient art of indigo. We will provide 2 cotton towels and all the materials used for shibori and the dye vat. You may also bring one small clean, washed cotton or linen item weighing less than 8 oz.

Please bring a water bottle and snacks, protective clothing for dyeing, a notepad and pencil, scissors to cut string, chemical gloves, and your imagination. 

 Pre-registration required.  Cost: $65 (includes materials),  Max. 8 students, Ages 14+ 

Helen Kennedy, a Portland-based knitter and fiber artist, fell in love with dyeing using natural dyes many years ago. She works with a variety of botanical sources in addition to indigo including using kitchen and garden waste as dye sources.

 

Workshop: Bamboo Mason Bee and bird hotels  1:00-3:30 pm

Do your flying friends need a place to hang out? Lets build them one!

Seattle based James Clever, a bamboo plant expert, will lead a class in making Bamboo Mason Bee and bird hotels. Students will have the opportunity to make two hotels during this workshop. Students might finish early but have the opportunity to work up until 3:30 pm. Please bring a water bottle, a snack, protective gloves, and hearing and eye protection. Students can bring these tools if they have them: drills, files, chisels, hammers. 

Pre-registration required.  Cost - $35.00 (includes materials). Ages 18 and over

James is the owner of Bamboo Gardener of Seattle and served as the President of the American Bamboo Society for many years. James Clever has been a bamboo grower since 1985. His expertise is in growing and building with bamboo through hands on experience.

Kids Activities  1 pm - 5 pm

A variety of fun kids activities will be scattered throughout the afternoon. 

Events for the kids include a Treasure Hunt, Face Painting, Panda Masks, Bamboo Necklaces, Giant Bubbles and Painting Bamboo Canes to take home or hang for decoration on the spirit walk fence. Send your messages to the spirits at the “Spirit Walk” and help us with the ceremonial burning of last year’s messages. There is even rumor of a spelling bee!

  

Demonstration:  Ikebana with Nana Goto Bellerud  4 pm

Ikebana, the traditional Japanese art form with plant materials and more, will be demonstrated by Nana Goto Bellerud.  Nana is the Director of Sogetsu Portland Branch and past President of Ikebana International, Portland chapter.  She is active in exhibiting, demonstrating, and teaching Ikebana in Portland and its surrounding area.

Potluck, 5 pm

Bring a dish to share! Folks in the past have brought a wonderful and wide variety of dishes. We will have fresh caught oysters, fresh tuna, hot dogs, cake, lemonade and coffee. Feel free to bring things to put on the grill and a favorite beverage.  

Featured Speaker:  Charissa Brock, 6:30-7:00 pm

Charissa Brock, an artist who has worked primarily with bamboo for the last 19 years, will be talking about her trip to Japan to meet other bamboo artists and learn about the use of bamboo in Japan. Her trip was organized by the Japanese TV show “Who Wants To Come To Japan.”

Silent Auction 1:30-7:00, Live Auction 7:00

Ned was a great collector of all things bamboo. We will have some of them, plus art, books, photography, and other items donated by friends of the Foundation.

The live auction will include some rare bamboo cultivars that originated at Bamboo Garden.  This is Ned's special contribution to horticulture.

Camp Out, 3 pm July 21st- 10 am July 22nd

Campers may start setting up tents in or around their favorite bamboo grove at 3 pm.  We will have a campfire after the potluck and events; bring your musical instruments.  Campers must leave the Bamboo Garden by 10 am.  Remember to “pack it out.”

The Portland Bamboo Festival
July 22nd, 2017 10 am – 3 pm
The Pacific Northwest Chapter of the American Bamboo Society hosts a festival each year at the Steven’s Pavilion, Hoyt Arboretum, 4000 SW Fairview Blvd, Portland, OR 97221.  Members bring plants, art, tools, books and handcrafts to sell.  There will be a demonstration of dividing a root-bound potted bamboo.  Artist Charissa Brock will be teaching an ongoing bamboo fan-making workshop (11 am – 2 pm).  Contact Dainsansome@gmail.com to become a vendor.
