Board Training:
Roles and Responsibilities
One of the fundamental challenges many boards face is not having a strong understanding of board member roles and responsibilities. This lack of understanding about what is–and is not–a part of the board’s essential roles can lead to a whole host of dysfunctions, such as micromanagement, rogue decision-making, lack of engagement, and more.
Boards must ensure that every board member fully understands what’s expected and needed of him or her, and then hold all members accountable for those responsibilities.
This workshop will explore the Ten Basic Responsibilities of Non-Profit Boards through experiential activities and scenarios in the context of the governance challenges facing nonprofits today. Participants will clarify and distinguish the board’s responsibilities from those of the chief executive and senior staff. In addition, they will discuss individual responsibilities of board members and examine a self-assessment tool for individual board members.
