OCEAN RACING!!!
Learn How to Race on Big Boats

MMA and Storm Trysail Foundation are holding a day-long seminar
based on Safety-at-Sea Seminars required of the crews of all yachts
participating in ocean races such as the Bermuda Race,
the Halifax Race, and the Trans Atlantic Race.
This seminar is for young sailors who want to learn to race and cruise on big boats.

There will be approximately 12 ocean racer/cruiser yachts
of various designs taking part in our Junior Safety-at Sea Seminar.
If you want to participate, you will be part of the crew of 6-12 other juniors
with a captain, and a coach on each boat.

NEW &
EXCITING TO THE PROGRAM!!

  • Our Guest Speakers at the seminar this year will include teenagers who
recently competed, as part of the youngest crew ever, to race Newport/Bermuda.

  • We will have a “big-boat” race in the afternoon.
The Gulf of Maine Ocean Racing Association recognizes the event
as a “regatta of interest” in which all sailboats are invited to compete.

After the race will be an awards cookout/crew-match party.

** ATTENTION!!!! **

We are offering a rare opportunity to those who want to stay on Bowdoin or
State of Maine
the evening before the event. If interested, make sure to select this option on the registration page.
Bring your sleeping bag (pillow is on each bunk), and arrive Wednesday, July 25th at 9:00 PM. Both vessels will be on the MMA waterfront docks. Bowdoin is coed. Lights out at 10:00 PM. Locker rooms available. Crew members will be aboard for the night.

**Parents/Guardians fill out the top registration, then go to the Blue Add button to register the Junior Sailor.

You may reserve a berth on one of the vessels upon registering your Jr. Sailor.
(First come/first serve. Bowdoin’s berths are limited).

For meals we suggest Castine Variety or Markel’s restaurants
across the street from the waterfront.

Topics that will be covered are:
Training will be hands-on such as: reefing, MOB recovery, VHF radio communication, live flare deployment, climbing the mast , line handling,
harness, tether and jack line use, extinguishing fire at sea, and storm sail rigging.

What To Bring:
Foul weather gear, PFD, deck shoes, a bag lunch and a Refillable water bottle.

Refreshments will be served mid-morning to all, including parents.
An MMA launch will be available for your parents
and friends to follow the big boats. Sailing instructors are welcome.
They will take an active role as coaches on each boat.
