Housing needs as you age: Knowing your options
2018 Navigating the Journey Family Caregiver Education Series.

Aging in place was once the norm in U.S. society, but with the spreading out of today’s family unit, modern land use trends, and housing design, aging in place is increasingly difficult to achieve. Most  older  adults  prefer  to  age  in  their  homes, but this usually requires age-friendly modifications to the home, as well as other supports. How do you anticipate what you will need, and where do you go to find dependable, affordable resources once those needs are realized? And, what do you do if you need even more help after that?

Join us for an informative, panel presentation from experts in the senior care community, who will talk about their experience with shared housing, services to bring into your home, non-profit organizations that help you stay at home and the various levels of care available to you when you can no longer stay at home.

Your panel presenters:
Debbie Davis has been working in the senior care community for over 17 years, building relationships and making connections. Debbie will share her experience with shared housing when she explains how she co-created an apartment in the home of friends. She will also disclose valuable information regarding local resources she has gathered from her work experience.

Jurie Lewis is a licensed residential and commercial real estate broker with a focus on sustainable development. She is also a board member of Villages NW, a virtual village of like-minded seniors who join together to develop the resources they will need to age comfortably in their own homes. The Aging-in-place Village is a nationwide movement. Jurie will discuss her insights gained from her experience as a Realtor and board member.

Kathy Ryan taught school for 45 years, and is now retired and a family caregiver for her aging sister. Kathy will talk about enrolling her sister into Providence  ElderPlace and how the program allowed her to go from primary caregiver, back to being a sister.

Jody Michaelson is a 17-year Multnomah County employee. She has served many roles, including Case Manager, Intake Worker, Adult Protective Services Investigator, and Program Supervisor.  Jody is a grateful working mom and a devoted working daughter.  In her presentation, she will explain the various levels of senior housing care.
