Understanding and Using Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Techniques in the Treatment of Substance Use Disorders

This interactive training will deepen your awareness of trauma informed techniques used in EMDR and will give you tools to build on your existing clinical knowledge and make EMDR techniques work for you and your clients who struggle with substance use disorders, but in understandable language. EMDR is a comprehensive psychotherapy that accelerates the treatment of a wide range of disorders and self-esteem issues related to disturbing events and present life conditions and has been empirically tested in randomized controlled studies with trauma patients and hundreds of published case reports, including substance use disorders.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this program, attendees will be able to:

  • Discuss that clients struggling with addictions have poor self-regulation
  • Recognize that trauma can be an underlying cause for addictions
  • Recall that helping clients connect to their bodies before EMDR processing is part of EMDR readiness
  • Identify there are stages of change in the Addiction process
  • Identify three components of the EMDR Approach designed to provide effective treatment with Clients
  • Name the eight phases of EMDR therapy for comprehensive treatment and how to implement the phases with clients
  • Identify the parameters treatable with EMDR therapy to safely and effectively implement EMDR therapy with SUD clients
  • Describe three aspects of the AIP Model for effective case conceptualization and treatment planning 
  • List three types of client complaints treatable with EMDR therapy
  • Describe the criteria for client selection and how to apply to SUD client cases
  • Describe three safety measures for effective and safe use of EMDR therapy
  • Demonstrate how to build dual awareness for SUD clients to help build safety in processing
