Course Description:
PDMP Training: This activity is designed to assist all prescribers that hold a Controlled Dangerous Substance permit with the new Prescription Drug Monitoring Program use mandates, which took effect on July 1, 2018. We will also discuss how to use the PDMP query portal as well as clinical use and best practices. These would include screening tools for opioid misuse and safe prescribing guidelines. Also, how to best incorporate the query into the practice workflow.
PANDA Training: Mid-Atlantic Prevent Abuse and Neglect Through Dental Awareness is a continuing education course designed to educate dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants and others about the problems of child abuse and neglect, bullying, intimate partner violence, elder abuse and neglect, and human trafficking. The Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners has approved this course to fulfill the required 2 CE credits needed every other license renewal cycle for Maryland licensed dentists and hygienists. This course is also a AGD approved for 2 CE credits.
The PANDA course aims to:
- Teach recognition of the indicators of abuse and neglect;
- Inform about the legal and ethical responsibilities in reporting and regerring victims;
- Educate individuals to become knowledgeable to recognize report and refer.
Learning Objectives:
PDMP Training:
1. Describe the Maryland Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP).
2. Determine when PDMP query is and is not required.
3. Summarize what the PDMP query portal looks like.
4. Confirm what other states' data can be accessed through the query portal.
5. Establish how to use the PDMP as a clinical tool.
6. Identify where to find safe opioid prescribing resources.
PANDA Training:
1. Describe the background, effects and risk factors of abuse, bullying, and neglect on children, vulnerable adults, elderly, intimate partners and victims of human trafficking.
2. Distinguish the physical findings that may be mistaken for abuse including injuries occurring from accidents, genetic and acquired conditions, infections, and cultural practices.
3. Explain oral health professionals' ethical and legal responsibilities regarding reporting abuse and neglect, implementing appropriate screening questions, and eliminating reporting barriers.
4. Identify appropriate local and national agencies to report abuse and neglect.
Speaker Information:
PDMP Training: Colleen George is Director for The Center for the Private Practice of Medicine for MedChi, The Maryland State Medical Society. MedChi is the largest advocacy group for physicians in the state. The center provides physician resources needed to thrive as clinicians and small businesses. Mrs. George works with medical practices, large and small regarding all aspects of practice management and the business side of running a medical practice. She also works very closely with the private insurance carriers as well as Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) in her role as staff respresentative on the Payer Relations Committee. For the past four years, Colleen has worked closely with CRISP and the Maryland Department of Health on the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP), providing outreach and education to all CDS prescribers on the PDMP use mandate as well as clinical use and best practices.
PANDA Training: Dr. King Smith graduated the University of Maryland Dental School in 1965 and has practiced oral surgery in Bel Air, MD since 1969. He is a faculty member at the University of Maryland, Perryville. Dr. Smith is a past member and President of the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners and a member of the Board of Visitors at the University of Maryland Dental School. He worked closely with the Mid-Atlantic PANDA (MAP) Board of Directors to secure MAP course as a required CE for a dental or hygiene license.

Prices increase 2 weeks prior to program date. Registration will close 2 days prior to the program date; however, we do accept onsite registration.
Registration includes a full buffet breakfast prior to the start of the program.
Department of Veterans Affairs Employees:
Afternoon program is approved for the 2 CE credits needed every other license renewal cycle for Maryland Licensed dentists and hygienists. This course is also AGD approved for 2 CE credits. Afternoon accreditation provided by Mid-Atlantic PANDA.
