Distribution System Resiliency: Prioritization, Assessment, and Replacement or Rehabilitation

Distribution System Resiliency: Prioritization, Assessment, and Replacement or Rehabilitation

Water utilities are committed to ensuring a safe continuous supply of water to their customers. Ensuring a continuous supply requires planning for asset rehabilitation and replacement. Prioritization of capital funds used for utility asset replacement or rehabilitation is often a struggle for utilities as managers are often challenged to balance resources necessary to operate their systems with long range capital needs.  This training will cover:

  • Master planning process used to establish how distribution system projects are generated during planning.
  • City of Gresham Seismic Resilience plan. How to perform a high level assessment of the seismic risks of piping, reservoirs and pumps stations.
  • Acoustic pipe condition assessment used to prioritize pipe replacement at the City of Gresham.
  • Use of real-time smart water grid technologies and condition assessment tools for pipeline risk assessment.
  • Pipe rehabilitation pilot study at Seattle Public Utilities and alternatives available to utilities.
  • Planning and implementing condition assessments and structural evaluations of existing reservoirs including methods and techniques for performing inspections and assessments of both steel and concrete reservoirs.
  • Comparison between proactive and reactive approach to maintaining steel and concrete coatings.
