Girls are four times less likely to be diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) than boys, but the reason for this sex disparity is unclear. Researchers have begun to measure how girls and boys with ASD are similar, and how they are different. In this enlightening workshop, Dr. Parish-Morris will address recent studies of social perception, language and camouflaging in girls with ASD and discuss implications for diagnosis and treatment planning.

Workshop Objectives

At the end of this activity, the learner will be able to:

  • Name the diagnostic criteria for ASD
  • Discuss the weaknesses in prior research on ASD
  • Describe how ASD manifests in girls

Presenter: Julia Parish-Morris, Ph.D. is Research Assistant Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry, Perelman School of Medi-cine at the University of Pennsylvania. The recipient of many awards, including the Center for Autism Research Award of Excel- lence, Dr. Parish-Morris has been featured in the New York Times, Scientific American, Time magazine and Parenting magazine. She has presented all over the world, including the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies Annual Convention, the Inter- national Society for Autism Research, and the American Educational Research Association.
