Maintaining Proper Boundaries

In a society of changing values and greater awareness of boundary violations, impacted constituents - patients, hospital corporations and Medical Boards - no longer accept inappropriate behaviors by physicians or other healthcare providers. Santé Center for Healing and The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center are jointly sponsoring a continuing medical education course "Maintaining Proper Boundaries," This is a 3-day training course providing self- assessment, knowledge, awareness, skills, applicable tools and prevention strategies to healthcare professionals with difficulty maintaining proper boundaries with patients, colleagues and/or staff. The "Maintaining Proper Boundaries" faculty is a mixture of tenured mental health clinicians and seasoned medical experts who create and encourage a course environment conducive to open discussions, sharing personal experiences and identifying next best steps for protecting physicians, their work environment and patients. The course utilizes a variety of lectures, multi-media inter-actives, and self-reflection to provide education, illumination and/or intervention that could save a license or a life.

Who Should Attend

This course is recommended to any licensed healthcare professionals in safety sensitive positions who experience difficulty establishing and maintaining proper boundaries. Hospitals, health systems, professional peer health programs may refer health care practitioners:

  • as a preventative measure for continuing medical education specialized for healthcare professionals ’
  • as a behavior intervention;
  • or as an adjunct to a relapse prevention plan. Self-referrals are welcome.

At course completion, participates will be able to successfully:

  • Identify the types of unethical behaviors and boundary violations that result in litigation, difficulty with the medical boards and/or hospital corporations, or action by other licensure boards
  • Discern behaviors and situations where the healthcare professional is most vulnerable to inappropriate involvement with patients, colleagues and/or staff members.
  • Recognize and develop strategies to avoid high risk situations and ethical dilemmas that leave the professional vulnerable to crossing boundaries.
  • Recognize high risk patients and identify how to avoid problematic situations with them.
  • Identify methods to safeguard the hospital, the office and other treatment settings.
  • Discuss the ethical and legal obligations for reporting and/or intervening on boundary violations of a colleague.
  • View and utilize Physician’s Health Program as an advocate.

 What attendees have said about this course:

“Where was this course when I was in medical school? These issues were never addressed until it was too late.”

“Learning that I need to set personal boundaries for myself as a physician is an essential take away from this class; the better I take care of myself the better I can take care of my patients.”

Course Details:

The tuition cost of the Maintaining Proper Boundaries course is $2,300; this includes continental breakfast, lunches, and CME fees. A $1,150 deposit is required to reserve a space.
