TARGET AUDIENCE:
Tracks and sessions are designed for the following disciplines: PT, PTA, OT, OTA, SLP, ATP, SMS, or any other professional(s) involved in the Assistive Technology field.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER:

TEACHING FORMAT:
Each session will have different teaching methods. Common overlapping formats include: hands-on learning, PowerPoint presentation, demonstrations, and group discussions.
LEVEL:
Overall both tracks (Mobility and Speech) are at an intermediate level.
CEU INFORMATION:
Physical Therapist, Physical Therapy Assistant, Occupational Therapy, Occupational Therapy Assistants- Monroe Learning Network is an approved provider of New York State PT, PTA, OT, and OTA continuing education. Course sessions are approved for a total of 6.0 Contact Hours/.6 CEU's for Physical Therapists, Physical Therapy Assistants, Occupational Therapists, and Occupational Therapy Assistants.
Assistive Technology Professional/Seating & Mobility Specialist- Monroe Learning Network is an Official RESNA CEU Provider. Course is approved for 6 Contact Hours/.6 RESNA Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) upon successful completion of this educational program.
Speech Language Pathologist- Course is offered for 0.5 ASHA CEU's (Intermediate level, Professional area).
Satisfactory Completion Requirements: SLP Participants must complete the following requirements: 1) Participants are expected to be present for the entire program (both sessions). No partial credit will be provided. 2) Complete the post-test and turn in upon course completion. 3) Complete and turn in ASHA CEU Participant Form upon course completion.

Refund Policy- Cancellations must be received no later than 24 hours prior to event start to receive full refund. If Monroe Learning Network cancels or reschedules the event, all participants will be fully reimbursed.

An Interprofessional Approach to Assistive Technology
Join us for Monroe Learning Network's 9th annual continuing education seminar! You're invited to be inspired; learn alongside different clinicians in the assistive technology (AT) world; and ultimately empower your clients at Bridging the Gap: An Interprofessional Approach to Assistive Technology. This is an opportunity to deepen your assistive technology knowledge in the Mobility or Speech field and strengthen your implementation strategies to transform your classroom, clinic, or practice. With the help of an exceptional line up of speakers, an inspirational keynote, your peers, and the latest manufacturers in the AT world we're confident you'll learn new skills to apply the very next day. Whether you're a Speech Language Pathologist, Physical/Occupational Therapist, or an Assistive Technology Professional; members of each field need to work collaboratively to transform and enhance the lives of people with disabilities.
We are excited to offer two different educational tracks: 1) Mobility & Seating and 2) Speech & Language.
Track 1- Mobility Education Sessions:
Cortical Visual Impairment in the World of Seating & Mobility
Session Learning Objectives:
| 1. Define cortical visual impairment. |
| 2. List the common characteristics individuals with CVI present. |
| 3. Identify at least 3 considerations to take into account when conducting a seating and mobility evaluation on a client with CVI. |
| 4. List 3 strategies to utilize when teaching a client with CVI to propel a manual wheelchair and drive a power wheelchair. |
Thinking Inside the Box: Standard Cushions and Backs
Session Learning Objectives:
| 1. Identify at least three overarching goals of seating and positioning. |
| 2. Verbalize three key differences between standard, adjustable/modifiable, custom-configured and molded seating systems. |
| 3. Identify and understand how different materials in seat cushions can impact both pressure relief and pressure redistribution. |

Examining the Components of Ultra Lightweight Wheelchairs
Session Learning Objectives:
| 1. Articulate three (3) key differences between a folding and rigid frame ultralight weight wheelchair. |
| 2. List one (1) advantage and disadvantage of both a small and large diameter caster. |
| 3. Identify at least three (3) components that can be incorporated into a rear wheel to assist with independent propulsion. |
Understanding the Functional Mobility Evaluation Form
Session Learning Objectives:
| 1. Summarize a minimum of 3 key requirements in documentation as they relate to proper Medicare funding. |
| 2. Demonstrate your understanding by completing the FME as it relates to their individual clients. |
| 3. Differentiate between when a client would qualify vs. not qualify for specific equipment based on Medicare coverage criteria. |
Track 2- Speech Education Track:
AM: AAC, Literacy & "5 to Thrive" Building Pillars of Support
Session Learning Outcomes:
- Outline the critical components for proficient reading including language development, phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing.
- Determine and support the unique needs of learners with complex communication needs in relation to reading and writing through hands on use of educational and assistive technologies.
- Outline a lesson plan and conceptualize a scope and sequence for reading mastery in the form of an electronic and/or physical binder as a resource for explicit, systematic, and goal directed literacy instruction and support.
Time Ordered Agenda:
- 5 minutes- Introductions and Disclosures
- 35 minutes- Research review and best practices regarding language and literacy development and AAC, Slideshow, discussion
- 60 minutes- Overview of a multisensory lesson plan (lesson plan template provided), addressing all five pillars. Slideshow, videos, discussion.
- 60 minutes- Assistive technology/AAC hands-on/interactive demos and group activities (with integration into lesson plans)
- 20 minutes - Reflect, share, Wrap-up/Questions
PM: Forbes AAC: Above and Beyond Face to Face Communication
Session Learning Outcomes:
- List the benefits of Forbes AAC's ProSlate and WinSlate Speech Generating Devices for various clinical populations.
- Describe a variety of mutli-modal communication strategies that may be used by individuals with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, and ALS over time.
- Identify 3 alternative access solutions for client with motor impairments.
Time Ordered Agenda:
- 30 minutes- Overview of Proslate Series and Winslate Speech Generated Devices
- 30 minutes- Implementation of a variety of Language Systems related to a variety of diagnoses
- 30 minutes- A focus on Alternative Access and Mounting Solutions for a communication devices.
- 30 minutes- Relationship between communication and mobility along with class discussion and follow-up questions.
Mobility Track Presenters:
Angie Kiger, M.Ed., CTRS, ATP/SMS is the Clinical Strategy and Education Manager for Sunrise Medical. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation Therapy from Longwood University. Angie also earned a Master of Education degree in Assistive Technology from George Mason University. In addition, she earned a certificate in Assistive Technology from California State University at Northridge. Angie is an Assistive Technology Professional (ATP), Seating and Mobility Specialist (SMS) and a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS). Prior to joining Sunrise Medical in 2012, Angie spend 12 years working at a sub-acute and transitional care pediatric hospital in Washington, DC as the Senior Therapist for the Assistive Technology Department and the Recreational Therapy and Child Life Department. Angie has contributed to articles in trade publications and serves as a member of Mobility Management magazines Editorial Advisory Board.
Claudia Amortegui is President of The Orion Group, a consulting company specializing in the reimbursement of rehab equipment. Her extensive and diverse experience comes from consulting for over 20 years, and from working on all sides of the industry: with Medicare, a manufacturer, and provider. She has been published numerous times in national industry publications, has conducted education programs throughout the US and Canada, and has recently launched a rehab focused web-based reimbursement tool. Her clients consist of manufacturers, providers, referrals and funding sources.
Speech Track Presenters:
Diana Petschauer, M.Ed., ATP is a RESNA certified Assistive Technology Professional, AT Consultant and founder of AT for Education, ATforED.com, and Access4Employment. Diana has over 20 years of experience in Assistive Technology, UDL & Ed Tech-K-12, Post-Secondary & Adult Services. She presents, speaks and trains nationally and internationally at small local venues as well as large conferences. Diana is a faculty trainer for the Center on Technology and Disability (ctdinstitute.org) as well as ATinNH at the UNH Institute on Disability. Diana will be co-presenting with Kelsey Hall, Ed.M., M.S., CCC-SLP, CDP, AAC/AT Specialist is a certified Teacher of the Deaf (TOD) and Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP), Dyslexia Practitioner (CDP via the International Dyslexia Association), and an AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication)/AT (Assistive Technology) Specialist. Kelsey is currently the Assistive Technology Coordinator at the University of Massachusetts, as well as a consultant for AT for Education. She continues to present nationally with AT for Ed regarding AAC, literacy, dyslexia, curriculum, and AT.

Shawna Dunnaway is an occupational therapist and assistive technology specialist currently working with Forbes AAC. She received a Bachelor Degree in Occupational Therapy from University of Missouri and a Master's Degree from Fort Hayes State University with an emphasis in Assistive Technology. Shawna is a licensed ATP through RESNA. She previously worked at the University of Missouri- Assistive Technology Center as part of an interdisciplinary team along with a speech language pathologist for 15+ years. In that role she has completed a vast number of AAC and computer access evaluations. In addition, she has consulted with schools for educational technology, worked extensively with alternative mobility and power wheelchair evaluations, AAC mounting, and completed work site evaluations for vocational rehabilitation. Shawna is passionate about developing and implementing AAC solutions for individuals with complex communication needs. She works in close collaboration with clients, caregivers and therapy teams to create systems that enable individuals with disabilities to participate actively in all aspects of their lives.
