Isolation is a growing issue that is strongly linked to the decline of health and wellbeing in older age. Studies have shown that isolation increases vulnerability to abuse and that abuse can also lead to increased isolation. This is why efforts to identify isolation and improve social support are an important part of preventing elder abuse.
It is estimated that nearly 14,000 seniors are experiencing isolation in the Greater Hamilton region. Since May 2016, with support from the Government of Canada's New Horizons for Seniors Program, the seven partners of the Hamilton Seniors Isolation Impact Plan (HSIIP) have collaborated to deliver innovative projects that address this issue. The HSIIP partners raise awareness about isolation across the community and offer free ‘Connector’ services to isolated seniors. A Connector is an advocate who works one-on-one with a senior for up to six months to get them anchored into services and activities. They begin by meeting in the home, assessing needs and developing an action plan together. They then help the senior follow through on the steps involved in accessing supports.
This webinar will offer insights about the successes of the HSIIP model, lessons learned about connecting isolated seniors, and examples of the relationship between isolation and abuse
