Designing Safe Schools One Opening at a Time

An opening in its simplest form has just a few parts, the frame, door, and hinges, and products to secure, control and protect the door. But getting all those parts to work together especially when you must consider building codes, accessibility, and the needs of the school, can be difficult. There are multiple ways to make an opening function, but what are the best ways? This course will take you through the 5 most common openings found in K-12 schools and discuss appropriate hardware choices that will solve the school’s needs while still meeting code requirements.

Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course participants will be able to:

list ways openings can help schools deter, detect, and delay and respond to theft and threats

describe the security needs of the most common openings in K-12 schools

discuss how codes affect the hardware choices for educational openings

specify appropriate hardware for these openings to maintain security

Presenters:

Michelle Bond is a San Francisco bay area native and graduate of Saint Mary’s College. She has worked in the door, frame, and hardware industry for over twenty years.
Michelle is a credentialed, Architectural Hardware Consultant, AHC, with certification from the Door and Hardware Institute, DHI. She has worked in many facets of the industry during her time as a business owner of a contract hardware company in Livermore, CA.
Michelle continues to teach classes for both the local chapter of DHI and also at the national level as a distinguished instructor. She currently works as a specification writer for Allegion PLC in Northern California.
