The Maryland Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA) and The National Leadership Consortium on Developmental Disabilities at the University of Delaware are excited to announce The Maryland Leadership Institute for DDA staff and the staff of DDA funded Coordination of Community Services (CCS) agencies. The Institute is November 26-30 in the Baltimore area. Over 150 disability professionals from Maryland have already attended one of the University of Delaware’s Leadership Institutes. This is an opportunity to join your colleagues by participating in this fun and life-changing experience!

This is a rare opportunity to participate in a week-long, intensive leadership development program to learn from each other and from leading experts from across the country to embrace the shift to individualized, responsive supports for people with disabilities. The skills, knowledge and values developed through participation in the Maryland Leadership Institute will be essential to the roles of DDA and CCS staff in supporting and assuring quality lives and meaningful community inclusion for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

 The University of Delaware will bring their highly-rated leadership development program to Maryland to support DDA and CCS staff to transform supports in Maryland for people who have an intellectual/developmental disability. Guest speakers and self-advocates from Maryland will supplement an agenda of compelling, highly participatory workshops and presentations.

The expected outcomes of the Maryland Leadership Institute for DDA and CCS staff include: Assessing and building your own strengths as a leader, exploring your role in understanding and supporting new service models, managing and sustaining transformational change, building positive organizational culture and developing "next in line" leaders within your organization.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Understanding the opportunities offered by the Community Pathways and other waiver services: How to help people advocate for the lives they want and assure that waivers are used effectively;
  • The role of Coordination of Community Services and DDA staff in supporting Person Centered Plans that assure that people receiving support have full, connected lives and retain decision-making;
  • The role of the Advocacy Support Unit of DDA and how to use it as a resource;
  • The role of the State and CCS agencies in assuring the quality of services as the Home and Community Based Settings Rule is enacted;
  • Your role with regard to creative housing solutions, community/relationship mapping, integrating opportunities for choice and control within existing settings and employment; and,
  • Working effectively with families and provider agencies and staff.

Target Audience:  The November 2018 Maryland Leadership Institute is for Coordination of Community Services agency staff and leaders and DDA staff and leaders. Participants will be selected through an application process administered by the University of Delaware. More than one participant from an agency/office can apply to and take part in this program.

Acceptance decisions will be made jointly by DDA and the National Leadership Consortium. The fee of $2,000/person will be paid by DDA for DDA staff. CCS agencies will be invoiced for $2000/person for the five-day Institute. Payment must be made prior to the Institute. After successful completion of the program, CCS participants’ agencies will be reimbursed by DDA for the full cost of the Institute ($2000/person). The fee includes all training activities, materials, hotel accommodations, meals, etc.

Here's what others have said about the Leadership Institue:                    In January 2017 I was a participant in the 44th class of the University of Delaware Leadership Institute. I joined an amazing group of inspiring leaders.  The opportunity to connect with and share experiences with peers was outstanding.  There was a joint sense of purpose. We left with the sincere belief that we could make a difference individually and as a group.  I was motivated to embrace so many more options related to structuring our organization and encouraging more independence and control by people who participate in our programs. If any leaders want to jump-start their creativity and build their leadership skills, I would highly recommend the Leadership Institute.                                                                                                              -- Rob Malone, Executive Director, The Arc Prince George's County

The Leadership Institute provides an excellent opportunity to individuals in executive/ management positions to broaden their knowledge in areas of history and policy changes in the IDD community coupled with excellent lecture and interactive engagement from experts in the field: this is by far the most worthwhile professional activity I have experienced.                                    --Cindy Parr, Executive Director, Arc of Howard County

The Leadership Institute lifts leaders to a higher level of thinking!                     --Melonee Clark, Support Broker, Shared Support Maryland, Inc

An Invigorating experience that rejuvenates your heart, soul and mind to bring about change.                                                                                                       --Patricia Sastoque, Deputy Director of Programs, Maryland Developmental     Disabilities Administration
