AN EARLY START FOR LEARNING:

How Breastfeeding, Talking, and Touch In Infancy Support School Success with Dia Michels

Join us for this special day-long seminar with award-winning author,

Dia L. Michels, in her debut seminar for BreastfeedLA!

Dia will entertain and enlighten in this fun day of learning about parenting in the wild, child development, and cultural attitudes — all through the lenses of lactation.
We understand a lot about science and technology, but there is also so much to learn from studying nature and biology.  In the wild, the day the child weans is the day he/she walks away.

Childhood and lactation are one-and-the-same. Everything the young need to know to the travel the path from helplessness to self-sufficiency in learned while breastfeeding. By looking at mammal mothering, we learn about the role breastmilk plays in child development and gain an appreciation of early mother-infant attachment. In the human world, there is a vast difference between breastfeeding and childhood, yet we know that the behaviors that occur organically in a breastfeeding home contribute to a child’s optimal physical growth, emotional security, and intellectual development.

Does breastfeeding also promote school readiness… and school success? Does breastfeeding play a unique role in promoting literacy? Can breastfeeding help reduce the Word Gap and diminish the Achievement Gap? The “Breast is Best” message has helped increase breastfeeding initiation rates. However, breastfeeding duration rates are well below desired levels. Are we starting too late in getting the message out that breastfeeding is the optimal way to feed a child?

How can we help kids see breastfeeding as normal in a culture where they rarely see it because moms wean early, moms nurse in private spaces, and baby dolls for kids all come with bottles? Can we increasing breastfeeding rates down the road by helping young children understand that “Breast is Normal”? Can community members providing consistent messaging that promotes breastfeeding?

Don’t miss out on this fun day to hear both the esoteric and substantial knowledge Dia has to share! Attendees will leave with new approaches to parenting and child development—with a keen sense of how special it is to be a mammal. Join us for this lively event that includes hands-on activities, audience participation, quizzes (with prizes!), and practical information to take back to your workplace.
