Understanding and Responding to Kids with Emotional & Behavioral Challenges Using a Positive, Trauma-Informed, Strength-Based Approach

Description:

 Strength-based practice is an emerging approach to guiding at-risk individuals that is exceptionally positive and inspiring. Its focus is on strength-building vs. flaw-fixing. This engaging yet powerful workshop will highlight many of the key principles and techniques of this transforming modality. Topics covered: What is strength-based practice and the power of a positive attitude & culture; the effects of trauma and positive emotions on the brain; strength-based communication techniques including: reframing, solution-focused questions, positive-predicting, and inspirational metaphors; how to help cognitively-inflexible young people; the importance of engaging families; strategies and activities for enhancing self-esteem in at-risk kids; a host of creative cognitive-behavioral techniques; core verbal interventions including de-escalation strategies and the power of humor; when and how to use incentives; respectful, relationship-based limit-setting; and strategies for helping professionals  manage number one first & stay motivated to do the job.

This workshop is designed for:

 Social workers (LCSW, LMSW, LISW, BSW, AAW), psychologists (Ph.D., Psy.D., Ed.D.) school counselors, school psychologist, professional counselors (LMHC, LCMHC, CMHC, LPC, LCPC), marriage and family therapists (LMFT, LIMFT) art therapists, play therapists, occupational therapists, graduate students, and others in the mental health-related field.  This is a presentation for professionals at all levels to participate.
