INDUSTRY 4.0 AND THE REBIRTH OF
AMERICAN MANUFACTURING
Common perceptions of manufacturing are generally out of synch with the reality that exists today. Far from being dark, dangerous and dirty the reality of today’s Advanced Manufacturing is bright, smart and on an upward rise. The promises of Industry 4.0 and “Lot Size One” are fundamentally changing how business is conducted at every level, from logistics to tax codes. Several enabling technologies are making this industrial revolution possible and plants are becoming more efficient, responsive and productive as “Made to Order” the norm. But what skills are needed and how are the education and manufacturing industries working together to build the workforce of the future? Let’s discuss what is being done nationally and in Minnesota to address today’s skills gaps.
Mike Nager is an electrical engineer and has worked for some of the world’s leading manufacturers of industrial controls and electrical components and has visited thousands of manufacturing and utility sites. He has presented at conferences held by the Connecting Electronics Industries association (IPC), the International Society of Automation (ISA), International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE), and the Material Handling Industry of America (MHIA) and IoT World. Mike volunteers with the IEEE Mini-Engineering Academy which gives local students hands-on experience in the technical fields. He has written several articles for industry trade publications and works for Festo Didactic, the world's leading manufacturer of technical education and curriculum products.
