The Denver Children’s Advocacy Center Presents: Child Abuse and Neglect Seminar

Your work might be as a parent leader within your early care and education program, as an advocate for your child in the educational system, as a parent representative on a committee at any level, or as a friendly neighbor helping other families in your community. As a parent, volunteer, friend, family member, or parent representative, you have a role to play in helping families stay strong.
Join The Denver Children’s Advocacy Center on October 24th as we explore the facts, signs and symptoms around child abuse and neglect and how communities and parents can take a strengths-based approach to prevent child abuse and neglect in your community.
Protective factors are the strengths and resources that families can draw on when life gets difficult. Taking those good characteristics and building on them is a proven way to strengthen the entire family and thus decrease the likelihood of maltreatment. Each of the protective factors is essential, but most important is what they do together to create strength and stability in families. The six protective factors are as follows:
- Parental Resilience
- Social Connections
- Knowledge of Parenting and Child Development
- Concrete Support in Times of Needs
- Social and Emotional Competence of Children
- Nurturing and Attachment
Opening Speaker:
Dr. Gizane Indart, PsyD
Dr. Gizane Indart is a bilingual and bicultural professional who has worked with traumatized children and their families since the early 1990s. Gizane is a ChildTrauma fellow at the ChildTrauma Academy under the direction of Dr. Bruce Perry. She speaks locally, nationally and internationally on the impact of abuse and neglect in early development, attachment difficulties in children exposed to maltreatment, and sexualized behaviors in children. Gizane is a member of the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect, the Children’s Cabinet Subcommittee, and the Early Childhood Mental Health Colorado Infrastructure. Additionally, Gizane serves as a consultant for the Child Abuse and Neglect Unit at the Children’s Hospital in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In 2017, she completed a two year training on Problematic Sexual Behaviors through the University of Oklahoma.

Cathy Hay, LMFT
Cathy is a master's level marriage and family therapist with extensive experience in working with child and adolescent survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. She also specializes in working with children who have special needs or severe emotional disturbances, as well as with youth caught up in the criminal justice system. While pursuing her master's degree at Pepperdine University, Cathy worked as an intake specialist and therapist with the Coalition to End Family Violence in California where she became expert in crisis management and meeting the immediate needs of mothers and children traumatized by violence.
Hollie Reinhart
Hollie joined DCAC in 2016 with 8 years of experience working with children and families. She began her career working in community mental health, working closely with children who had experienced ongoing trauma. After graduating from Wichita State University with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, Hollie began her master’s degree in Human Development and Social Intervention from New York University, completing the program in 2014. During an internship opportunity while studying at NYU, she worked closely with a Child Advocacy Center and started her training as a Forensic Interviewer. Hollie began forensic interviewing in 2015 and is dedicated to the continued research and application of best practice of forensic interviewing.
