Community Inclusion Training

 This two-day training will focus on creating community and building relationships. It is funded by the State of Washington Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA) and is open to staff who support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in their homes and communities, and other community partners in Washington state.

    

Community Inclusion is an individualized service that provides opportunities for participants to engage in community-based activities that support socialization, education, recreation and personal development for the purpose of:

• Building and strengthening relationships with members in the local community who are not paid to be with the person.
• Learning, practicing and applying skills that promote greater independence and inclusion in their community.

The following skills will be our focus:

• Community Inclusion - Purpose and Goals
• Role of Community Inclusion Service Providers
• How to perform Discovery to help people explore and develop interests, skills and activities that can turn into valuable social roles in the community and help form long lasting relationships
• Problem solving and designing supports and communication strategies to succeed
• Small group practice using tools to help identify initial and ongoing goals, objectives and actionable plans
• Finding and developing new resources and opportunities in the community to move people's lives forward in a positive direction
• Practice planning, setting up and conducting informational interviews

Information will also be provided on how to work with others in and outside the participant's agencies to work toward the goals and objectives as teams.

• In order to receive a certificate of completion for this training, attendees can miss no more than one hour total during this two-day event.

 The Trainers:

 

Stephen Eyman, Program Manager with Wise, grew up in a home where the disability experience was an everyday part of the family tapestry. This instilled in him a love for diverse forms of communication, a desire to see people live life to the fullest, and opportunities to support people to transcend communication differences to connect with one another. Stephen studied Spanish and International Studies at Whitworth University. Because of his experience, Stephen sees great opportunity in sibling education, and recognizes the valuable role siblings can play when they are invited to the conversation and have access to information and training. Stephen strives to think outside the box to support people to achieve fullness of life and equity, and he sees employment as a valuable tool to achieve this goal. Stephen lives in his home community of Spokane, WA, which he considers an underappreciated gem of the ever-beautiful Pacific Northwest. There, he has worked in employment services, community access, therapeutic recreation, and in the development of a work study project with local universities involving Person-Centered Planning and support for students (14-21) in preparation for transition from high school. 

  

Josie Sparks, Program Manager with Wise, possesses deep experience supporting individuals with and without disabilities in various settings. She bring years of experience leading teams to explore and experience their greatness. Josie has worked with a phenomenal team that played an intricate part in supporting people in both vocational and community settings. She plays a vital role in challenging her team to help people with disabilities achieve personal goals, establishing themselves as contributing members of their communities and finding innovative ways to promote independence. Josie had the pleasure of presenting at the 2017 TASH conference in Atlanta, Georgia where her focus was Community Inclusion and the Pathway to Employment. 

Dan Rutten, Program Manager with Wise, has been working in the field of Supported Employment since 2004 and has worked as a Job Coach, Employment Consultant, and Program Manager. Dan is a Certified Employment Support Professional (CESP) through APSE and received his BA is Social Sciences from the University of Washington. Being a strong believer in the idea that knowledge exists to share, not be kept, Dan enjoys collaborating with people whenever possible. Dan’s professional interests include job coaching and fading supports, environmental adaptations, Person Centered Planning, utilizing goal setting to drive services, as well as program management strategies.
