Systematic Instruction and Follow Along

May 15-16, 2019 in Olympia, WA

This two-day training is sponsored by the Washington Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA) and is open to stakeholders in Washington State.

The training will focus on helping individuals learn to perform and maintain their employment. Topics will include a basic overview of a job start, including how to prepare for the first day of work and how to conduct a task analysis.  We will explore systematic instruction and task analysis, with particular attention to fading support from the first day of work. The training will also include the use of natural supports, as well as important elements of successful long term support.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Gain an overview of instruction and self determination as these topics relate to the history of supported employment
  2. Obtain a general understanding of job design
  3. Learn to conduct task analysis
  4. Consider how individual learning styles and teaching methods can be applied in various situations
  5. Obtain a general understanding of systematic instruction
  6. Gain tools to help an individual prepare for their first day at a new job
  7. Develop the ability to identify and implement natural supports at a worksite
  8. Identify key elements in providing long term supports to help individuals maintain employment
  9. Consider how employment agencies can provide strong training, job start and retention services.

 

 

The Trainers:

Teri Johnson, Consultant for the past 35 years.  Teri's focus has been the development and support of quality employment opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities.  Individualized technical assistance experience includes: identification of strengths and preferences to guide job development, designing tasks and environments to accommodate learning style; utilizing systematic instruction in teaching new and complex tasks; development of self-management strategies to increase and maintain independence; and troubleshooting performance issues including speed, accuracy and employability skills.  In addition, Teri teaches in a certification program developed for Employment Consultants offered through Highline College, provides staff training in employment and residential settings in multiple states, and is a consultant/trainer with the Project SEARCH Training Institute, Cincinnati, Ohio.

Aimee Nelson, Trillium Employment Services "Everyone can learn if we can figure out how to teach them" Marc Gold.  Aimee has embraced this belief for over twenty years.  During the past 18 years with Trillium, her primary focus has been discovering how people learn and utilizing best practice in systematic instruction.  In addition, Aimee is Lead Instructor for the OELN Systematic Instruction course; a certified Right Response trainer; and a provider of Technical Assistance through the Washington Initiative for Supported Employment.  Aimee also leads the Trillium School to Work team, building strong relationships with school districts, families and funding agencies.  Aimee holds a degree in Psychology/Criminology and a minor in Human and Family Develompent.


Shaun Wood, Wise Program Manager, is a community developer who is passionate about social justice and equality of opportunity, and has worked to support people with disabilities since 2002. Since then, he continues to work in schools, people’s homes, and job sites helping to build inclusive communities. Click here to see some of his work on YouTube. Shaun is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and a certified Employment Specialist. He served in the United States Peace Corps in Bulgaria and surrounding countries, and has both his M.Ed. in Applied Behavior Analysis and his B.A. in Political Science and Human Rights from the University of Washington. Shaun is particularly interested in using ABA, emerging technology, reflective processes, and mentorship to drive employment outcomes.

The Washington Employment Learning Network (WELN) is a 4 part series for employment professionals to receive core competency training.  WELN is accredited by the Association of Community Rehabilitation Educators (ACRE).  Find more information on ACRE here.
