Being people centred is the best pathway to improved business and technical performance in tanker operations.
At our forum in Athens on May 9, we'll explore different ways this can be achieved.
The best way to get good human performance is to design your systems and process around people. Recruit people who can work well in the complex environment of a ship, and help them understand how their contributions to the work leads to business results.

9.30 The seafarer...Hero or Hazard?
Martin Shaw of MOAMS Ltd, chair of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMAREST) Human Element Sub Committee
There is much talk about human error at the moment, generally with the finger being pointed at those aboard. Is the seafarer the cause of problems?
Or does James Reason's quote from 1990 sum it up better. ‘Rather than being the main instigators of an accident, operators tend to be the inheritors of system defects created by poor design, incorrect installation and bad management decisions. Their part is usually that of adding the final garnish to a lethal brew whose ingredients have been long in the cooking’.
In most cases the seafarer makes the system work more safely, efficiently and economically. How do we help them more?'
