ASCE Geo-Institute Technical Presentation

Dear Member,
Please join us on Tuesday, November 13th for our monthly technical presentation. This month's presenter is Dr. Zhangwei Ning, Tehnical Manager with Sixense Group in Northern America.

Multiple Roles of Satellite Technologies in Geotechnical Instrumentation and Monitoring

This presentation is based on the article ‘Eyes in the Heavens’, published in ASCE-GI magazine, Geostrata November/December 2017 Issue. Geotechnical engineers have been well known for long in studying the ground beneath people’s feet, while there is little awareness of the fact that we are also utilizing various tools high in the sky. In this presentation, Dr. Zhangwei Ning will introduce the roles and applications of three different satellites for geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring with case studies in Southern California. They are telecommunication satellite for instrument remote control and wireless data transmission; GNSS satellite for high precision ground; structural deformation monitoring and earth observation satellite for large scale ground deformation monitoring.

Speaker Bio

Dr. Zhangwei Ning is a geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring expert and the area technical manager for Sixense Group in Northern America. He received his B.S. and M.S. in Civil Engineering from Tongji University in China, and his Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering from North Carolina State University. Dr. Ning has extensive experience in studying and observing soil behaviors using both numerical methods and near real-time instrumentation and monitoring techniques, with a multi-scale perspective. As a technical lead, he has participated in a wide range of monitoring projects, including: tunnels, deep excavation, bridges, dams, landslide, landfill, etc. Dr. Ning currently servers on ASCE Geo-Institute Underground Engineering and Construction Technical Committee, and Deep Foundation Institute (DFI) Testing and Evaluation Technical Committee
