Interactive Storytelling, Part 2
Using storytelling to build emergent literacy skills, engagement, and whole group collaboration.

4-Hour Professional Development:  ELTA

Earn a CUNY Certificate of Completion and CTLE Credit for Professional and Level III Teaching Assistant certificate holders.

During this workshop, which builds on Interactive Storytelling Part 1, participants will more deeply explore the strategies of interactive storytelling and whole-group, participant-centered learning. Attendees will build storytelling skills, develop techniques to bolster student participation, and acquire tools to support early childhood literacy and English language acquisition.

The workshop will focus on:

  • scaffolding questions to support participation
  • effective facilitation of higher-order questions
  • reincorporating students’ responses

Participants will reflect on their work, give and receive feedback, and discuss further application of these strategies to support diverse learners across curriculum topics.

Who should attend?
Educators interested in exploring a new outlet for engaging their students. While registrants are encouraged to attend Interactive Storytelling Part 1 prior to registering for Part 2, completion is not required for registration.

Led by Helen Wheelock, Director of the Early Learning Program. Coffee and tea provided.

What our participants are saying about the Interactive Storytelling Professional Development session at CAT:

"Each moment of ‘reading aloud’ is an opportunity to make it literacy learning w/out being didactic but fun!"
"I saw how important storytelling was and the difference that was made when I didn't hold a book."

“So many concepts have been presented. The goal as I see it, is to rethink the way students have been subjected to. The class will learn that reading is an active fun activity, vocalizing, physicalizing, etc.”

“I'm realizing the depth of what is involved with the engagement of students in a 'simple' ten minute story. Reading along with students brings life and meaning into what has, in my experience, always been presented as a drab and boring activity. Not having to 'stick to the script' brings out the best in us.”
