Child Centered Play Therapy

 Presenter:  Mary Ortwein, MS, LMFT

12 Clock Hours/1.2 CEs

Description:

In this workshop you will learn the what, how, and why of Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT). Child Centered Play Therapy was introduced in the 1950's by Virginia Axline, who worked with Carl Rogers. CCPT is easy to learn and easy to do. It avoids a common pitfall of directive play: your intervention matches the needs of the child because the child leads the way. Research shows it has a high level of effectiveness on a variety of child problems. It is also the foundation for the highly effectiveFilial Family therapy. This is a hands-on workshop with multiple practice sessions and open discussion.

This workshop is designed for:

Social workers (LCSW, LMSW, LISW, BSW, AAW), psychologists (Ph.D., Psy.D., Ed.D.) school counselors, school psychologist, professional counselors (LMHC, LCMHC, CMHC, LPC, LCPC), marriage and family therapists (LMFT, LIMFT) art therapists, play therapists, occupational therapists, graduate students, and others in the mental health-related field.

Learning Objectives:

After attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify children for whom CCPT is appropriate and introduce them and their parents to it
  • State Axline’s Foundational principles that create the structure  of CCPT
  • Demonstrate use the six core therapeutic strategies of CCPT:  following the child’s lead, tracking, limit settingempathic responding, handling questions and commands, and working from within role plays
  • Identify the characteristics that mark a child’s progress through the stages of CCPT: warm-up, aggressive play, dependency play, and mastery play.
  • Fit CCPT into an overall treatment context with a variety of diagnoses and family contexts.
