Light Weighting Silicone Rubber Materials
Presented by Jose Gonzalez, Rubber Technologist for R.D. Abbott
OVERVIEW
This presentation will cover the application and technology of light weighting silicone rubber materials. More specifically, the addition of 3M™ glass bubbles compounded into Dow silicone elastomers creates an elastomeric material of low density generally below 1.0 specific gravity. Filler loading techniques are studied to create an efficient process of light weighting. Furthermore, this light weight material has the ability to perform well in molding, extrusion, and calendaring operations. Light weighting silicone materials offers many advantages to the aerospace, automotive, and transportation industries. This serves to enhance fuel savings, and help meet environmental demands.
