Iowa Epilepsy Advocacy Day

Join us on March 12th to educate legislators on epilepsy.  This is a great opportunity to meet with your local legislators who represent you to share your journey of epilepsy and how that impacts your quality of life.  We encourage individuals, families, caregivers, spouses, friends, professionals and others who are impacted by epilepsy to be in attendance!

Agenda:

1:30 PM Check-In/Social/Refreshments (Get your purple "1 in 26" T-shirt to educate legislators that 1 in 26 people will develop epilepsy in their lifetime.)

 1:30 – 4:00 PM Seizure Simulators

In My Shoes, an empathy tool: A multi-sensory, immersive experience which allows you to “step into the shoes” of a person with epilepsy who has a focal seizure (using Virtual Reality technology). A 14 minute virtual reality experience. Disclaimer: not recommended for those who have epilepsy.

2:00 PM Program

2:30 PM Small group discussion on advocacy training with Rik Shannon of the Iowa Developmental Disabilities Council for those who are new to the Capitol or would like a re-fresher

2:30-4:30 PM Meet with legislators (Drake University Students to take small groups of attendees upstairs to meet with local legislators. Remainder of time spent in legislative dining room visiting with legislators who come down to our reception.)

3:45 PM #EndEpilepsy Proclamation Signing by Governor Kim Reynolds, Governor's Formal Office, Room 109
