Potter’s Inn Alumni Retreat with Martin Laird

Join us for a special weekend of homecoming, building friendship, sharing and growing together.  We’ve invited Dr. Martin Laird to be our leader for the weekend.  This weekend is designed to help resource us and help us grow in our prayer life!  We want to highly recommend that you join us for this significant weekend retreat.  Dr. Laird’s work has deeply impacted thousands around the world. His work is in the early church fathers and mothers and their important voices needed in our world today.  This weekend, we can join with others who know the work of Potter’s Inn and have had some part of the ministry through a retreat, soul care intensive, soul care day, the Potter’s Inn Soul Care Institute or through Steve’s books. Join the Potter’s Inn family and let’s grow together!

Retreat Topic:

The cluttered, reactive mind generates and sustains the illusion that we are separate from God and therefore need to seek God as though God were an object.  Over time, the practice of contemplation gradually begins to clear clutter.

In this contemplative prayer retreat, Dr. Martin Laird will discuss some of the key obstacles we all face in our liberation from the cluttered mind such as anger, fear, comparing ourselves with others, as well as some of the subtler problems maintained by mental clutter mind, such as using contemplative practice as a strategy to acquire and control our own contemplative project.

Dr. Laird will teach us how to quiet our busy, noisy minds so that we can experience God and learn how to “be still so that we can know God.”  The weekend will have a flow which allows us to:

  • Hear the teaching of one of the world’s foremost scholars on prayer, silence and experiencing God.

  • Times to practice prayer together.

  • Times to fellowship and hear from those who are attending.

  • A special banquet on Saturday night to hear from Dr. Laird and Steve and Gwen Smith, Co-Founders of Potter’s Inn who will share an exciting message and update everyone on ministry of Potter’s Inn.

Martin Laird, O.S.A. is a member of the Order of St Augustine and Professor of Early Christian Studies at Villanova University, USA. He has extensive training in Contemplative Disciplines and gives retreats and lectures throughout the United States, Great Britain and Ireland. Among his books are Into the Silent Land and A Sunlit Absence, compelling works for those interested in contemplative prayer. He draws on the ancient wisdom of both the Christian East and West as well as on contemporary literature. His most recent book, An Ocean of Light, continues the discussion on gleaning more about the role of prayer in our lives.
