DSM-5 Update

Friday, March 29, 2019

Beaver Creek Country Club

8:30 am - 11:45 am  (3 Hours/CEUs)

Registration Check-in:  8:00 am - 8:30 am

Training:  8:30 am - 11:45 am

This program is funded in part by the Willliam B. and Sylvia A. Hunsberger Fund

The release of DSM-5 resulted in significant changes in the expectations for correlating diagnosis and treatment plans as well as the organization of how diagnoses are recorded. In addition, it reconceptualized a number of categories of mental disorders resulting in the elimination or reclassification of some, the addition of new disorders and the changing of diagnostic criteria for others. This in-depth seminar will update clinicians on the most effective and efficient use of DSM-5. Details and intricacies of the DSM-5 will be explored in the context of the six item “Case Formulation Assessment” used for recording and reporting diagnoses along with outlining a treatment plan. Upcoming changes for the ICD-11 code will be discussed.

At the conclusion of the program, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss overall organization of the DSM-5
  • Summarize the retained, reorganized and additional disorders in the DSM-5
  • Prepare a Case Formulation Assessment
  • Discuss the correlation of the DSM-5 to ICD-10 and soon to be released ICD-11

Featuring:

Dr. Carlton Munson, PhD, LCSW-C, is a professor at the University of Maryland School of Social Work where he teaches psychopathology (DSM-5/ICD-10) and clinical child welfare. He participated in the clinical trials for the DSM-5. He has published 7 books, two on past editions of the DSM diagnostic system, and written numerous journal articles and book chapters. Dr. Munson was the clinician in a precedent setting Maryland Court of Appeals case that affirmed the right of LCSW-C social workers to perform DSM diagnosis, to testify as experts, and to testify to ultimate issues in courts. This case has had widespread impact on clinical social work practice in Maryland and nationally. Dr. Munson began his career with Brook Lane in 1969. At that time, therapy staff consisted of five social workers, five psychiatrists and one psychologist and the DSM-1 and DSM-2 were in use.
