The Future of Senior Housing Communities, Unprecedented Changing Demographic Shifts and Increasing Importance for Healthcare

Join SMPS San Diego for a fascinating discussion on several changes occurring in the senior housing industry. The number of people 65 and older in the United States is expected to increase to 55 million by 2020; to some 70 million by 2030, and to 88.5 million — or 20 percent of the population — by 2050. Senior living developments will have to respond to a greater diversification of services including dining options, greater emphasis on lifestyle and wellness programs and more choices in housing design and furnishings. Advanced technology will also allow healthcare providers to diagnose and interact with patients via computer screens mitigating healthcare costs and ER visits enabling healthier lives. Other topics will also include family care giving shifts, price points of different income levels and the new “old."

The Future of Senior Housing Communities, Unprecedented Changing Demographic Shifts and Increasing Importance for Healthcare.

Panelists:

Douglas Wilson, Chairman/CEO of Douglas Wilson Companies

Doug Wilson came to San Diego from Denver in the 1980s to build Symphony Towers, the iconic full-city-block, mixed use project designed by world class architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.

San Diego's downtown skyline showcases two other Doug Wilson projects -- The Mark and Park Loft; both credited with being catalysts to the success of Petco Park and the surrounding neighborhoods.

When the marketplace took a turn and plunged the economy into a near-depression, Doug Wilson pivoted to its other long-tested business model of handling workouts nationwide. Wilson emerged to become one of the country’s most prominent fiduciaries, trusted by private investors, banks, and government to reposition or sell over $15 billion in troubled assets.

Fast forward to 2018 when the team refocused yet again — this time on the needs and compelling demographics of the nation’s aging population, which Wilson terms the "Silver Tsunami.” In addition to creating a new Legacy Asset Services platform to help families manage the transition of wealth from the baby boomer generation to its adult children, Douglas Wilson Companies has launched a new brand of senior living communities. In November 2018, Doug and his team opened the $32 million, 111-unit Sienna at Otay Ranch comprised of 85 apartments for assisted living, 26 units for dementia care and upmarket resident amenities. Douglas Wilson Companies has plans to build five to 10 such properties throughout the Western Region.
