Hearing Screening Workshop

Overview: This 3 hour workshop will provide knowledge and training to implement an effective hearing screening program in alignment with the WI Child Find that requires all school districts to identify, locate and evaluate children with disabilities.

Target Audience: school nurses, speech/language pathologists, health aides, instructional aides, and volunteers.

Rationale for a Hearing Screening Program: provides an opportunity to identify children who may have hearing loss impacting their access to auditory instruction;  restricting the effectiveness of educational intervention. Research from the Center for Disease Control’s Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III, 1988 – 1994) indicated 14.9% of children ages 6-19 years of age are impacted by hearing loss. Hearing deficits in children can interfere with normal speech and language development, communication, and the ability to learn. It is important to detect even a mild hearing loss in order to treat the problem or compensate for the loss as much as possible. The earlier a child who is deaf or hard of hearing starts getting services, the more likely the child’s speech, language, and social skills will reach their full potential.

Workshop support includes: basic ear anatomy and physiology, hearing disorders and causes, consequences of hearing loss on education and learning, screening program methods, procedures and follow up guidelines. Screening technique and training will be conducted by a licensed educational audiologist.

A certificate of attendance will be provided.
