Principles of the Imperial Academy’s Teaching formulas

and the Art of Modification

This herb class introduces the tradition of the Imperial Academy ‘teaching formulas.' It presents some of the fundamental formulas of the Imperial Academy. By grasping the principles behind these formulas, we are empowered to create our own formulas in a more flexible and accurate way that applies the essence of these teachings while addressing the unique individual patient.  The class will also learn a method for modifying formulas that helps the practitioner maintain the clarity of the intention of the formula while emphasizing the individualization. This helps us to practice herbal medicine as an art.

Another avenue for exploring herbs is to look at the unique, irreplaceable signature of the individual herb. Individual herbs have long been thought of as teachers. From shamanic journeys to contemporary scientific research, herbs reveal the complexity of the natural world and hold keys to the mysteries of human nature. By interacting with certain herbs, we come to learn about our inner nature.
