This webinar will introduce participants to the foundational elements of Motivational Interviewing (MI) as a way of being and communicating to help people change. MI can be utilized in diverse settings and helps practitioners connect rapidly with clients, with the goal of evoking motivation to change from within the client. Participants will gain an understanding of the rationale, theoretical and evidence base for the effectiveness of MI. The webinar be interactive, with opportunity for questions and for participants to explore how MI may be relevant for their work. Opportunities to ‘try out’ sample elements of MI skills will be included, with the goal of helping participants determine if more in- depth training would fit their interests and goals.
This workshop is designed for:
Social workers (LCSW, LMSW, LISW, BSW, AAW), psychologists (Ph.D., Psy.D., Ed.D.) school counselors, school psychologist, professional counselors (LMHC, LCMHC, CMHC, LPC, LCPC), marriage and family therapists (LMFT, LIMFT) art therapists, play therapists, occupational therapists, graduate students, and others in the mental health-related field.

- Verbalize the rationale for Motivational Interviewing as a guiding style
- Identify the components of the Spirit of Motivational Interviewing
- Identify the core skills of MI and how they help evoke motivation from the client
- Explain the difference between ‘change talk’ and ‘sustain talk’
Presenter: Joanne Taylor, PhD
Director for the Clinical Psychology Post-doctoral Fellowship and a Regional trainer and consultant for MI/MET. Dr. Taylor received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1989. She has three decades of experience in a broad range of clinical areas, with emphasis in Health Psychology, and has been a leader in promoting both staff and program development, most notably as an expert in Motivational Interviewing and in helping to advance holistic, patient centered healthcare. Dr. Taylor is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT), the Society of Behavioral Medicine (SBM), the Suffolk County Psychological Association (SCPA), and she holds a faculty appointment to Stony Brook School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry. She has conducted countless trainings in MI (from beginner to advanced) for mental health, medical and allied health professionals, and provides follow up consultation and mentoring for staff interested in developing advanced skill in the use of Motivational Interviewing.
