Aims: To provide an update on the current techniques at the interface between oral surgery and restorative dentistry.

Objectives:

To highlight relevant up-to-date guidance and referral pathways

To discuss management considerations for restorative options instead of extractions

To discuss the role of the multi-disciplinary team in management of complex cases

To inform on medico-legal aspects of implant surgery

Speakers’ Profiles 

Mr Robert Bolt

Clinical Lecturer & Specialist in Oral Surgery, Sheffield

Dr Robert Bolt is Clinical Lecturer and registered Specialist in Oral Surgery. He is both medically and dentally qualified and is Director of the University of Sheffield “One-to-One" dental implantology course. Dr Bolt is also lead for the University of Sheffield’s undergraduate dental implantology curriculum and delivers a number of lectures and practical classes to both undergraduate and postgraduate students throughout the year. He has many research interests in the field of Oral Surgery and Implantology including pre- & peri-operative anxiety management, HPV-related oropharyngeal carcinoma, in-vitro 3D models of the implant-bone-mucosa interface,and analysis of the tumour microenvironment. Dr Bolt’s clinical interests include Guided Bone Regeneration techniques and the use of more extensive grafting techniques in the management of significant bony defects. Dr Bolt has a vibrant private practice, and supports a number of general dental practitioners in their delivery of high quality implant care.

Mr Simon Atkins

Senior Clinical Lecturer & Consultant Oral Surgeon, Sheffield

Simon graduated from the University of Sheffield in 1999. He was awarded a Clinical Research Fellowship from the Wellcome Trust and gained his PhD in the field of peripheral nerve repair in 2008. He completed his higher surgical training (ACCOMS) in 2012. Following this, he was appointed as Senior Clinical Lecturer/Consultant Oral Surgeon. He provides the major clinical input to maintain Sheffield as a leading internationally renowned specialist centre for nerve repair and exploration. He is an expert in the surgical management of trigeminal nerve injuries but has broad surgical interests. Simon is a Regional Speciality Advisor for Oral Surgery and Deputy Chair of the M Oral Surg Examination, reviewer for scientific journals and examiner at EDI.

 Mrs Ade Mosaku

Consultant in Restorative Dentistry, Leicester

 Ade graduated in 1988 from the University Of Lagos Nigeria School Of Dental Sciences. She subsequently undertook her specialty training in Restorative Dentistry at the Edinburgh Dental Institute where she completed her training. She took up post as Consultant in Restorative Dentistry in 2005 at University Hospitals of Leicester, Glenfield Hospital and is currently Head of Service for Orthodontics and Restorative Dentistry.  She also chairs the Managed Clinical Network (MCN) for Restorative Dentistry for NHS England Central Midlands and East (North Locality). Ade Is a Member of the MFDS Advisory board for the Royal College of Surgeon Edinburgh and is involved in examining for the college nationally and internationally. She is involved in the multidisciplinary care of patients with Hypodontia of patient with Head and Neck cancer. This is in addition to the management of patients with complex restorative care.

 Dr Elaine Cook

Dentolegal Adviser
BChD

Elaine qualified from Leeds University in December 1986, and was commissioned into the Royal Army Dental Corps in 1987 on a Short Service Commission before taking a Medium Commission in the Royal Air Force in 1992. She has extensive experience of primary dental care within the military, both in peacetime and on operations, and served in the first Gulf war conflict. Elaine now works as a civilian salaried practitioner within the Armed Forces, and maintains her military roots as a Royal Auxiliary Air Force Dental Officer with 4626 Squadron. She has also gained experience within the NHS, Private and Community Dental Services as a locum dental surgeon whilst studying for her legal qualifications, so has a broad knowledge of many areas of dentistry.
Elaine holds a Graduate Diploma in Law and a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Studies, she is currently studying for the Postgraduate Certificate in Dental Law and Ethics. She joined Dental Protection in September 2014 as a Part-Time Associate Dentolegal Adviser working two days a week in the Leeds office

 Mr Phil Tomson

Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry

Head of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics

Phil Tomson is a Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at Birmingham Dental Hospital and School. He is Head of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics and Designated Individual for the Human Tissue Authority in Dentistry at Birmingham. Phil completed his higher speciality training in 2011 and holds specialist registration with the GDC in Restorative Dentistry, Endodontics, Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics and Periodontics. He completed a PhD in 2013 with research focused on regeneration of the dentine-pulp complex. He has won the Wladimir Adlivankine ESE research prize and was one of the first recipients of the FDS research fellowships from RCS Eng. His main research interests lie in tissue regeneration and engineering of the dental pulp, therapeutic methods in irrigating the root canal system and novel methods of assessing root canal disinfection. He is heavily involved in postgraduate and undergraduate teaching programmes at Birmingham School of Dentistry. Phil lectures nationally and internationally on subjects related to the clinical management of pulpal and periradicular disease.
