5.3.19 - Tobacco, Cigarettes, E-Cigs, Juuls, Marijuana: What the Dental Professional Needs to Know

Course Description:

Tobacco use impacts the oral and overall health of your patients.  It is clear to everyone that we have a devastating smoking problem which is not going away any time soon.  It is incumbant upon dentists, dental hygienists, and dental assistants to join with all healthcare professionals to combat this crisis.  The goal of this course is to provide an understanding of how tobacco products impact your patients, and educate you on how to confidently guide your tobacco and nicotine using patients to quit their addiction. 

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify the tobacco and nicotine products currently on the market.
2. Learn the impact of these products on oral health and overall health.
3. Understand the basics of nicotine addiction.  Know the smoking cessation modalities which are currently available and apply them to one's practice.

Speaker Information:

Dr. Zablotsky received his dental and postgraduate degree in periodontology from the Tufts School of Dental Medicine.  He has lectured throughout the US and internationally on tobacco related issues, was a lecturer for the ADA Cell Seminar Series, and lectured at the 2017 ADA annual meeting.  He recently authored a chapter on tobacco and oral health, and tobacco cessation in the periodontal textbook, "Non-Surgical Control of Periodontal Diseases."  Dr. Zablotsky received the Vermont Advocate of the Year award from the American Cancer Society and the lifetime achievement award for the Vermont Special Olympics, and was the past president of the Vermont Periodontal Society.  He presently is a senior consultant and lecturer on tobacco curricula at Nova Southeastern University Dental School. 

Continuing Education:

Chesapeake Health Education Program, Inc. is an ADA CERP Recognized Provider.  ADA CERP is a service of the American Dental Association to assist dental professionals in identifying quality providers of continuing dental education.  ADA CERP does not approve or endorse individual courses or instructors, now does it imply acceptance of credit hours by boards of dentistry.  

Chesapeake Health Education Program, Inc. designates this activity for 4.0 ADA continuing education credits.

Evaluation and Certificate:

All attendees are required to sign-in in order to receive credits.  Sign-in sheets will be available at the registration desk for up to 30 minutes prior to the start of the program and 30 minutes after the start of the program. 

An evaluation will be emailed to you within two business days of the program's completion.  Once you complete and submit this evaluation, your certificate will automatically generate to be saved or printed. 

Registration Information:

VAMHCS Employee (with ID): $35 prior to 4/20/19; $45 starting 4/20/19
Dentist - Community Rate: $165 prior to 4/20/19; $175 starting 4/20/19
Hygienist - Community Rate: $129 prior to 4/20/19; $139 starting 4/20/19
Assistant/Staff - Community Rate: $115 prior to 4/20/19; $125 starting 4/20/19

Prices increase two weeks prior to the program date as indicated above.  Registration will close end of day on April 30th; however, we do accept onsite registration.

Registration includes full buffet breakfast starting at 7:30am.  No lunch will be provided.

If you are registering as a VAMHCS Employee, you will be required to show proof of current employment via government issued VA ID badge at check in.  If you do not have your badge, you will not be granted access to the program or you can choose to pay the regular rate.
