2019 Annual Conference

March 30, 2019

Join your community of Maryland AMTA Therapists at our Annual Conference.

We have focused on bringing you the latest information on some very current topics. Saturday, we begin the conference learning about pharmacology and how doctors are approaching pain, current preferred medications, especially in light of the opioid crisis, and the use of topical Cannabis substances (CBD oil.) After our Annual Meeting at lunch we are offering an Ethical Practices class that will continue the morning's conversation.

Lunch on Saturday will include our Annual Meeting, all Maryland AMTA members are invited to attend the meeting even if you are not able to attend the conference.

We have cancelled the Sunday classes due to low registration.

Saturday Classes - Lunch - Annual Meeting
Pharmacology for Massage Therapists

with Dr. Carrie Hempel - Saturday 9:00am - 12:00pm

Pain management is a multibillion dollar industry and is making rapid changes.  What was used yesterday to manage a patient’s pain may not be used today. The reality of the opioid crisis is real and many physicians and patients are trying different medications to alleviate pain. Massage therapists need to know what methods physicians and patients are using, how it effects the body, and how it will affect the massage we provide.

Over the course of her career Dr. Hempel has seen the consistent struggle of patients dealing with chronic, progressive, debilitating illness, and witnessed the challenges and limitations of the current pharmaceutical options for pain and symptom management. Her passion for this population has grown, along with her desire to advocate for patients to have access to non-opioid, holistic options to enhance quality of life and optimize function.

AMTA - Maryland Chapter Annual Meeting

12:00pm - 1:30pm with lunch

All of our Maryland members are invited to participate in our Annual Meeting over lunch (free.) Meet the board and the newly elected Board Members and Delegates. Hear about our plans for the rest of 2019, and into 2020. If you are curious about education and legislation, want to connect with other therapists, and have a good lunch, join us for the annual meeting. We hope you attend the whole weekend as well!

Current Topics in Ethics

with Amelia Mitchell - Saturday 2pm - 5pm

Thankfully, we work in an industry that is moving and evolving. There are many things showing up in our practices that didn't exist when we were in school. We will look at the ethics of incorporating a variety of topicals such as Hemp based CBD oil into one's practice. New data and studies are available that sometimes contradict what we were taught, let's talk about what we know, how we can ethically communicate with our clients, and where that scope of practice line falls in different circumstances. As with all of Amelia's ethics classes there will be plenty of time to consider the gray areas, share opinions, and expand our knowledge and point of view.
