Book Talk - Blood in the Water

Blood in the Water: How the US and Israel Conspired to Ambush the USS Liberty penetrates what Professor Richard Falk has called “the greatest moral and political scandal in American history.” This was the surprise attack on an unarmed American intelligence ship in the east Mediterranean in the middle of the Six-Day-War. What happened has been covered up since 1967 by every President since Lyndon Johnson.

Using interviews with surviving sailors and government documents, including Soviet archives, the author reconstructs the events leading up to the attack. Investigative reporter and Temple professor Joan Mellen presents chilling historical insights, which continue to fuel U.S. foreign policies in the Middle east.

Joan Mellen is Professor Emerita at Temple University where she taught literature and creative writing for fifty years. She is the author of twenty-four books including, most recently "Faustian Bargains: Lyndon Johnson and Mac Wallace in the Robber Baron Culture of Texas"; "The Great Game in Cuba: CIA and the Cuban Revolution"; Our Man in Haiti: George de Mohrenschildt and the CIA in the Nightmare Republic"; and "A Farewell to Justice: Jim Garrison, JFK's assassination and the Case That Should have Change History," about which she spoke at the Free Library in 2005. She is a winner of Temple's Great Teacher Award, a lifetime achievement award, and a Temple University Faculty Award for Creative Achievement.  Her media appearances include C-Span's Book TV and NBC's Today Show.
