Critically acclaimed Chicago-based writer Fern Schumer Chapman has written several award-winning books. Her memoir, MOTHERLAND -- a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers selection, a finalist for the National Jewish Book Award, and a BookSense76 pick -- is a popular choice for book clubs. Her other books, IS IT NIGHT OR DAY?, LIKE FINDING MY TWIN, and STUMBLING ON HISTORY are used in middle school classrooms. In 2004, the Illinois Association of Teachers of English (IATE) named Chapman the "Illinois Author of the Year." Twice, Oprah Winfrey shows have featured her books.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Rochelle Distelheim’s first novel, “Sadie in Love,’’ is set in New York’s Lower East Side during the great wave of Eastern European Jewish immigration in the early twentieth century. This enchanting book especially resonates with readers whose grandparents came to America at that time.

The book tells the story of Sadie Schuster, a widow in the neighborhood who owns an apartment building there. Sadie is well known in the community for selling love knot charms to her superstitious neighbors. Yet she is finding it difficult to find the right man to love for herself.

Ms. Distelheim has the great skill of writing both with poignancy and humor. Her depiction of the hustle and bustle, the sights and smells, of the Lower East Side is magnificent.

Rochelle Distelheim has received significant recognition for her writing including the 2017 Gival Press Competition for Short Story and the Katharine Anne Porter Prize.
