Description: This workshop will explore the possibility that you can change your thought processes, feelings and emotions via neuroplasticity through the practice of mindfulness as demonstrated by information on depression.

PRESENTER:  Faye Freeman-Smith, LCPC, DCC, ACS


Freeman-Smith is a college administrator, Clinical Licensed Professional Counselor, Mental Health Trainer and very active civic leader.  She has a Master’s degree in Community Mental Health Counseling and Administration and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. She is the Director of Student Counseling Services at Heartland Community College (HCC). She has presented the Real Colors (in Mandarin format with an interpreter) to the HCC visiting Chinese faculty for the past 10 years and was a key developer of the Mandarin Instrument for the National Curriculum Training Institute.  She has trained Illinois State University Student Affairs leadership and has presented at both national and local events, including those held by The Association for Women in Communication Bloomington-Normal Chapter (AWC), Black Business Alliance (BBA), Association of University and College Counseling Center Directors (AUCCCD), and the National Association for Developmental Education (NADE).

She has a private practice (Counseling Resource Institute), which includes face-to-face and online therapy, mental health training, and clinical supervision. She has been on the Advisory Board of the Higher Education Mental Health Alliance for establishing standard in Distance Counseling to implement across the United States. Through providing supervision to counseling interns she has been an Adjunct Faculty member for the University of Illinois, Bradley University, Illinois State University She has served the Bloomington-Normal Community professionally and as a volunteer for more than 17 years.  She is a founding member of the Black Business Alliance and is the recent past President.  She has served on the boards of The Bloomington-Normal Boys and Girls Club; McLean County Extension Council; Unity Center; Great Plains Life Foundation; and is a Founder and past Board Member for McLean County’s Multicultural Leadership Program.  She is also one of the founders of Bloomington-Normal’s first African-American Radio Station, WXRJ 94.9FM, and has served as their CEO for 5 years. She is also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Incorporated and The Links Incorporated. She was awarded the YWCA Women of Distinction award for Social Services in McLean County in 2016.
