Course description

This 1-day course teaches the fundamentals of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T). The GD&T method is much more robust than traditional +/- tolerancing and provides a higher degree of accuracy for part design and fabrication. Designers, machinists, drafts persons, mechanical engineers, procurement engineers and quality assurance will learn how to apply GD&T to their own job. The course is approved for 6 professional development hours (PDH) for professional engineers and is also open to all professionals and students.

The course closely follows the ASME Y14.5-2009 standard and will provide class participants with the ability to:

  • Understand GD&T definitions, terminology and basic rules
  • Explain the general dimensioning concepts
  • Describe the symbology and datums used in GD&T drawings
  • Discuss the effects of various application options on GD&T
  • Calculate critical values using GD&T
  • Read a GD&T drawing and begin applying it to actual designs

Accreditation

The course complies with the requirements of the NYS Office of Professions for continuing education credit. At the successful completion of the class, the participants will have earned 6 PDH credits to help satisfy a portion of their Professional Engineering continuing education requirements. 

Participation Certificates will be presented to all course participants. A micro-credential (digital badge*) will be issued to students who pass the exam which is given at the end of the day. The exam is not mandatory.

Instructor

Michael Brown is a Mechanical Design Engineer at The Raymond Corporation in Greene, NY, part of Toyota Material Handling North America, with over 15 years of industry experience. Along with developing new products for Raymond, he is the Subject Matter Expert in GD&T, practicing, teaching courses, and supporting the engineering and manufacturing teams. Prior to working at Raymond, Mike was a Research Engineer at Reactive NanoTechnologies in Hunt Valley, Maryland. He has a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Rochester Institute of Technology. Mike currently lives in Endicott, NY, with his family
