The Curious Case of the Calcareous Ravine

The Curious Case of the Calcareous Ravine

Tucked-away in the woodland section of the Williamsburg Botanical Garden is a small, rock-walled model of a ravine that showcases a specific kind of flora and habitat that occur naturally right here in Williamsburg and James City County.

Learn about plants such as miterwort, dog violet, zig-zag goldenrod, interrupted fern, and umbrella magnolia. Known as "mountain disjuncts", these plants grow in the mountains and western Piedmont, skip the eastern Piedmont, and then reappear in certain deep, moist calcareous ravines in the coastal plain.

Our speaker is Donna M.E. Ware, Ph.D., noted botanist, author, former curator of the William & Mary Herbarium, and founding member of both the Williamsburg Botanical Garden and the John Clayton Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society.

If you were looking for "Weed is not necessarily a four-letter word", the topic has changed to "The Curious Case of the Calcareous Ravine."  We regret any confusion.
