Rubber and Plastics Failure Analysis- Physical and Chemical Analysis Techniques 

The course is intended chemical technologists, engineers, and quality personnel who, in the course of their work, encounter non-conformances related to rubber and plastic materials or rubber and plastic end products. The course begins with a series of case studies involving failures of rubber and plastic products the instructor has encountered. The discussion includes physical and chemical techniques, the rationale for the techniques selected, and the ultimate outcomes.  Cases studies include ozone failures in elastomers, stress cracking and impact failures in plastics, fatigue failures, chemical degradation, errors in materials used, and more. 

ASTM and related testing methods are reviewed including tensile tensile testing, abrasion testing, compression set and stress relaxation tests, impact tests, and the like.  Predictive methods such as Arrhenius and SN methods are discussed.   Analytical and instrumental methods covered includes: polymer identification by simple wet chemistry methods as well as more advanced methods such as FT-IR, NMR.  State of cure, microbeam analysis, and chromatographic methods are discussed.

Finally, a series of additional case studies related to a broad range of actual failure analyses including tires, cast polyurethane parts, medical devices, automotive parts, hose and tubing, sporting goods, and the like.

Instructor Bio:

Dave Russell is a graduate of the University of Akron where he studied Engineering, Mathematics, Chemistry and Polymer Science.  Dave has worked in the polymer industry for over 40 years working for companies like Goodyear Synthetic, Eaton Corp, Akron Rubber Development Laboratory Inc, Akron Polymer Laboratory Inc, Smithers Scientific Inc, Citrics Biomedical Inc, Biomerics LLC, Theken Spine LLC and Integra Life Sciences Inc. 

Dave’s has extensive experience an all levels of business from bench chemist to CEO operating: materials R&D labs, compounding plants, polymerization units, quality organizations and entire businesses.  After 15 years with Eaton’s Engineered Polymer Products Division he returned to UofA to study Polymer Science then in 1992 formed Akron Polymer Laboratory Inc. 

In 2003, after selling Akron Polymer Laboratory Inc, Dave formed Akron BioMaterials Inc. a business specializing in medical grade polymeric materials.  Most recently, Dave sold the assets and know-how of Akron BioMaterials Inc to Biomerics LLC a supplier of medical grade polymerics, catheters, and injection molded products. 

Dave’s bibliography includes multiple patents and publications in the areas of polyurethanes, high energy radiation crosslinking, spine implants, bone grafts, nano- materials, and anti-microbials.
