Introduction to Polymer Science

Intended for materials scientists, engineers, and technical sales and marketing personnel involved in rubber and plastic materials.  This course is designed to provide, for non-chemical as well as chemical professionals a general understanding of the fundamental polymer chemistry and structure-property relationships as relates to polymers used in rubber and plastics industries.  First, the course covers the fundamental reactions such as free radical, anionic, cationic, nucleophilic addition and coordination polymerizations along with differentiations among chain addition and step addition type of chain formation kinetics. Next the discussion moves to various types of polymerization engineering processes such as emulsion, solution, bulk, and gas phase polymerizations along with post polymerization processes. The theory of rubber elasticity is discussed in practical terms along with effects of polymer architecture and morphology as a basis for understanding why some polymers are soft and very elastic and others somewhat or very rigid.

A broad range of commercial rubber and plastic type polymers are discussed in terms of basic polymerization reactions, backbone structure and how they are made, along with identification of key properties and related end uses.  The course follows the teachings from the following: Principles of Polymerization 4th Edition, George Odian, Wiley Publishers and Textbook of Polymer Science 3rd Edition, by Fred W. Billmeyer Jr. John Wiley & Sons

Instructor Bio:

Dave Russell is a graduate of the University of Akron where he studied Engineering, Mathematics, Chemistry and Polymer Science.  Dave has worked in the polymer industry for over 40 years working for companies like Goodyear Synthetic, Eaton Corp, Akron Rubber Development Laboratory Inc, Akron Polymer Laboratory Inc, Smithers Scientific Inc, Citrics Biomedical Inc, Biomerics LLC, Theken Spine LLC and Integra Life Sciences Inc.

Dave’s has extensive experience an all levels of business from bench chemist to CEO operating: materials R&D labs, compounding plants, polymerization units, quality organizations and entire businesses.  After 15 years with Eaton’s Engineered Polymer Products Division he returned to UofA to study Polymer Science then in 1992 formed Akron Polymer Laboratory Inc.

In 2003, after selling Akron Polymer Laboratory Inc, Dave formed Akron BioMaterials Inc. a business specializing in medical grade polymeric materials.  Most recently, Dave sold the assets and know-how of Akron BioMaterials Inc to Biomerics LLC a supplier of medical grade polymerics, catheters, and injection molded products.

Dave’s bibliography includes multiple patents and publications in the areas of polyurethanes, high energy radiation crosslinking, spine implants, bone grafts, nano- materials, and anti-microbials.
