Plastics Materials Selection and Specification

The scope of this course includes thermoplastic elastomers, general purpose plastics and engineering plastics and high-performance engineering plastics.  The course is intended for material specialists, design engineers, tech service personnel, procurement specialists and others who wish to broaden their understanding of polymeric materials and applications.  The course first provides a general overview of plastic materials based on type, economics and key properties.  Next, a general framework for selection, evaluation, and specification is provided in the context of the fundamentals of ISO design processes and guided by ISO, SAE and ASTM standards, recommended practices, and specifications.

Next, case studies of actual plastic failures are used to demonstrate the root causes of many field failures and to demonstrate importance of proper design control processes and testing. Then finally, a review of the chemistry, technology, key properties, and key applications is presented covering all the major commodity resins, engineering plastics, high performance engineering plastics, and thermoplastic elastomers.
