SCERTS® Summer Academy

Presented by Emily Rubin MS, CCC-SLP

Attend one, two or all three days.

SCERTS® Model - Introduction (August 6)

SCERTS® (Social Communication, Emotional Regulation, Transactional Support) is an innovative educational framework for children with autism and related social learning differences. This introductory training will begin with a review of the research in social neuroscience and how this helps us understand how children acquire the foundations of social and emotional competence before they are talking, at the emerging language stages, and at conversational levels.  Participants will learn how neuro-developmental differences need to be considered when implementing evidence-based practices and how the SCERTS assessment framework can be used to generate educational objectives that are predictive of developmental shifts toward social emotional competence.

SCERTS® Program Planning (August 7)

This 2nd day is the next step for those who have completed an introduction to SCERTS.  This training will move toward implementation of SCERTS in Action by ensuring participants are able to determine developmentally sensible and functional IEP objectives, appropriate evidence-based supports, and educational planning grids.  Participants will learn how to determine a child’s developmental stage, observe natural routines, provide mentorship to team members and collaborate to identify key transactional supports and educational plans.

SCERTS® Assessment  (August  8)

This 3rd day is designed for those who have been to introductory and implementation training and are now interested in learning the formal SCERTS Assessment Process (SAP).  The SAP is a criterion referenced assessment process that can be implemented to establish a profile of strengths and areas of need in those areas most impacted by the core challenges of autism and related social emotional learning differences.  It is a tool that can be used to establish a current level of performance and monitor progress over time.  This training will focus on how to score the SAP efficiently and achieve reliability with data collection.

In addition to the SCERTS Assessment, her publications have focused on early identification of autism, contemporary intervention models, and programming guidelines for high functioning autism and Asperger’s Syndrome.  She recently participated as a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s Ad Hoc Committee on Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), a committee charged with developing guidelines related to the role of speech-language pathologists in the diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of ASD.  She lectures internationally and provides consultation to educational programs serving children and adolescents with autism and related developmental disorders.
