Canine-Assisted Therapy

Synopsis: This presentation will introduce canine-assisted therapy with a focus on the empirical support and clinical applications of this therapy. In addition, Dr. Mayer will discuss the development of canine-assisted therapy as an intervention, differentiate it from other types of canine services, and explain the paradigm behind its success. Concerns will also be addressed. Steps toward implementation of a program and resources for therapy dog organizations will be shared.
     

Biography:  Dr. Carly Mayer is a post-doctoral fellow at Kurtz Psychology. She completed her doctoral degree in School Psychology at St. John's University. Dr. Mayer provides treatment for children with selective mutism, anxiety disorders, ADHD, and disruptive disorders. She is also a New York State Certified School Psychologist.

Dr. Mayer has over ten years experience volunteering with canine-assisted therapy programs. She regularly conducts workshops on the benefits of canine-assisted therapy programs and completed her dissertation on the utilization of school workshops in increasing knowledge and acceptability of these programs, addressing legitimate concerns, and measuring change in taking steps towards implementation. She has presented on canine-assisted therapy programs at St. John's University, at various schools in the New York area, and at the 2016 NASP conference.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Differentiate therapy dogs from service dogs and emotional support dogs.
  2. State ways to address common concerns about impelementing canine-assisted therapy programs.
  3. State one academic, medical, and social-emotional benefit of using canine-assisted therapy programs.

American Psychological Association: CE Learning Systems, LLC is approved by American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. CE Learning Systems maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

Association of Social Work Boards: CE Learning Systems (Provider #1020) is approved as a provider for social work continuing education by the Association of State Social Work Boards (ASWB) www.aswb.org, through the Approved Continuing Education ACE program. CE Learning Systems LLC maintains responsibility for the program. ASWB Approval Period: 02/23/2016 – 02/23/2019. Social workers should contact their regulatory board to determine course approval. Social workers participating in this course will receive 1 continuing education clock hour.
