Presentation: Missouri Water Resources Plan Update
Presenter: Matthew Scott
The state of Missouri has embarked on an update to the Missouri Water Resources Plan that will be completed over the next 2 years. The plan is a long-range, comprehensive strategy to provide an understanding of Missouri’s water resource needs. The state’s 6 million residents depend on well-managed water resources, not only for potable water but also to support agriculture, outdoor recreation, and industry. The project is made possible through a cost share with the US Army Corps of Engineers Planning Assistance to States (PAS) program.

The Missouri Water Resources Plan will help to identify future shortfalls in water supplies, and explore options to address those water needs. This may include project recommendations such as new infrastructure development, regionalization of water use, integration of water supplies and the pursuit of financial assistance opportunities.
As part of updating the plan, the state is engaging technical experts and stakeholders to complete tasks including:
The Missouri Water Resources Plan has gathered technical workgroups focusing on consumptive needs, non-consumptive needs, infrastructure needs, agricultural needs and water quality. These technical workgroups will be instrumental in prioritizing the challenges and opportunities associated with water resources in the state. The plan will look at population and water demands out to 2060 to identify water supply and infrastructure gaps. The plan may include recommendations such as new infrastructure development, regionalization of water use, integration of water supplies such that Missouri can secure its water future.
Matthew Scott is a water resources engineer with CDM Smith out of their Kansas City office. He received his Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Missouri – Kansas City, and has most recently completed his Masters of Science in Civil Engineering at the University of Kansas. He has worked at CDM Smith for nine years, and is experienced in both hydrologic and hydraulic modeling using a wide variety of modeling software. He currently lives in Kansas City with his wife, 6-year old daughter, and baby and while he is typically more of a baseball fan, he enjoyed rooting on the Chiefs this season!
